In France they had hypermarkets (hypermarché) basically just very large Walmart. I've never heard anyone else in the world have a distinction between supermarket and hypermarket but the French did. Would you go to the hypermarché?
I've been to a huge ass supermarket that was like walmart sized this one time, and yeah I'd call that a hypermarket. most 'supermarkets' in Europe are a fraction the size of some of those American ones. they're useful in how big they are, but just imposing and encroaching, I'd much rather have a market than a hypermarket
