        The unfortunate result of which is that there is no reasonably playable version of Nier: you either deal with PS360 exclusivity and an obfuscated script or an inferior soundtrack, visuals and some of the worst doll-looking character models ever produced (also that stupid creepy brother protagonist jfc why)

        Yoko Taro ruined it, Square did us dirty

            Who wouldn't, the kid's a boring nothing creepo anime protagonist. I know every second Big Guy in games nowdays is some aggrieved father but it was sort of neat when it came out. Kidnier has the same dynamics as the main pair in Shadow of the Collosus, lmao

        That's in the original game too c: I played it in 2010, I prefer dad Nier and I didn't like the changes they did to the soundtrack.

            In the new game? edited after mulling on it The original 360 and ps3 ports have it implied through the dialog but not stated outright.. I have only played the original. IIRC Kaines dream was better in the Japanese, but it did get localised with changes. The English swearing was improved in the localisation but it's been like 14 years.

            I used a Kainé pfp for a long time.

              I remembered the original versions having a very vague translation when it came to her identity or something. Im not sure were I got that from if it isn't the case.

                You have to beat it 4 times for the full story but there is some changes to the original like the below scene I've put a spoiler.

                instead of her being beaten up by the bullies, they tear her clothes to see what's underneath and see her genitalia

                The character did mean a lot to me so this change I can't be upset about.

                It's very much implied and blatant in Kainés dream (one of her bullies shouts "what are you acting like a girl for, uh?"), and in another cutscene she mentions her body not being "normal" even before the shade possession.

                I think I twigged what was going on from the dialog, went and checked out the Japanese differences and mixed up with my memory. But I knew outright she was intersex, I guess you could say it takes one to know one izutsumi-idea I didn't know prior to playing as I play and consume media completely blind. But once I'd beaten the game I did find that the media surrounding the game had a field day with it. I won't post what some media outlets highlighted about her, but I'm sure the freeze-gamer™️ had a field day.
