Stuff like this is why arguing that there's no meaningful distinction between Democrats and Republicans usually falls on deaf ears. There are plenty of areas where the parties are in lockstep -- foreign policy is the classic example -- but then there are a bunch of areas like this. There are Democrats (especially local Democrats) who are actively dismantling mass incarceration, and on the other side of the aisle Tom Cotton is a presidential frontrunner.

"Both sides are bad" is the truth and needs to be repeated. "Both sides are equally bad" is a falsehood and a fascist talking point.

Exactly, but that's a tough distinction to maintain and an easy one for opponents to intentionally conflate. "Democrats could be way better than they actually are" might be an easier way to accomplish the same thing.

might as well argue about whether the moon is made of cheese. it might be (not a moonologist, not sure), but either way the point is irrelevant because it's all up there in the sky, not going to go there any time soon.

this isn't nearly a widespread viewpoint in the whole party, though. most democrats are biden/harris-level about cops

Tons of Democrats are shit, absolutely. But you also have stuff like marijuana legalization -- an enormous step in ending mass incarceration -- that's produced real results and is almost entirely a Democratic project at this point. Nothing like that exists in the GOP, and it's a significant factor in the Democratic Party.

Tom Cotton would never win the general (knocks on wood)
