Good take.
It’s really frustrating living next to America. I can’t tell you how many times the conversation ends at “but at least we’re not America” when you try to bring up literally any flaw about Canada. It really limits our imagination.
"It could be worse" is the worst argument against "Let's make things better".
You fucking get what you give, american scum. Doesn't feel very nice to seek refuge in the country north of you only to be shat upon, hey?
Canadians having a rational fear for public health and safety is not really xenophobia.
Americans are seen as plague rats. I am not even being overly drastic. Most Canadians want nothing to do with the cluster fuck down south out of legitimate fear.
Pedantic argument incoming but.... The public health concern was also true of anti-Irish, anti-Italian, anti-slav, etc. sentiments in American history. Immigrants carried hella disease due to the conditions they suffered in their home countries, the overcrowded transatlantic ships, and slums in the US. There was a valid public health concern there too. It was still a xenophobic stereotype based on a lack of compassion for the 'other'.
Americans are not crossing the border for refuge or asylum.... they are coming across for non essential work, vacations and the lower Canadian dollar.
No one has a problem with things like trade and health workers crossing the border.
If the American people and government were not batshit crazy and dumb as fuck. The border would be fully open. They are the cause of their problems. Canadians want nothing to do with their self inflicted mess. You can call it what you want.
I guarantee if you asked Canadians if architects should be exempt from the border restrictions. A very large percentage would reply “Fuck architects, fuck their dogshit county and fuck their car.”
My friends who have known me long enough to know my father is [redacted] and I spent a lot of my life in [redacted] didn’t trust me for the first 2 months of this shit.
Like motherfucker you were living in my couch last month. Can’t really blame them though. Fuck America.
Yeah, I saw one guy's tricked-out Mazda of some sort the other day with US plates and I'm guessing to combat this he had like a hundred "fuck trump" decals on the back and a message saying he was here legally.
Not cool when It happens to me and not cool when it happens to this people.
Not a fan.
You have no idea of who got fucked or their reason to be in Canada.
Xenophobia is not funny nor good, Its an addictive poison.
Im all for hurting the right people but those people are never going to be "a nationality" or an ethnic group.
Many americans claimed they were "travelling to alaska" and then just vacationed in vancouver. It's not like they're fleeing for their safety, and if they are, they can quarantine like adults.
Still not cool, some of then might have had legitimate reasons to travel and taken precautions.
Perhaps, but I would be hesitant to draw equivalence between the experience of say, refugees fleeing violence and experiencing discrimnation (or more violence) in a western country, and the experience of an American who got their car scuffed because they pose alegitimate public health risk
