But didn't they say that Windows 10 was the last version of Windows and they'd just keep updating it? They lied?! :surprised-pika:

Yeah I'm wondering that as well. My guess is that they'll market it as an update to windows 10 but also as it's own thing moving forward. Kinda like windows 8.1 is seen as it's own thing for the most part even though it was part of the windows 8 family.

Windows 8.1 was the funniest shit ever. "Wait people like taskbars?! Fuck fuck fuck OK add it back and call it 8.1 or something idk"

I honestly don't understand how they just took out the start menu and desktop and replaced it with a garbage fullscreen menu with no alternative and thought it would go well. Props for doing something new but they fucked up so bad by making it the only option. Windows 8.1 was super weird but I kinda liked it for that and they did have a start menu. Linux is still superior though :libretion:

Windows XP was the last "good" Windows. Linux is better in every conceivable way. And yes, the fact that it is harder to play g*mes is better because they are Bad and Cringe.

also valve is putting serious money into getting windows anticheat to work in proton so maybe newer games won't be so hard soon. They already have kernel call interception it's just a matter of optimizing now (which they need to do a lot of to get anything playable lol).

Steam is (comparatively) good. If Windows was able to get a lock on a PC games store years ago, none of that would have been conceivable.

            I use 8.1

There's an option for a start menu? I've just been using the fullscreen one all these years. I got used to it tbh.

Windows 10 though is just fucking awful

Don't forget they removed the start menu from Windows SERVER 2012 too, before they released Server 2012 R2 with the start menu, just like Windows 8.1.

It is still completely baffling to me, I know they would have focus tested it. Maybe it was an attempt to get rid of the old Windows MT control panel apps sooner, which it looks like Windows 11 is removing.

Windows 10 sucks massive amounts of ass and no I will not explain.

An OS that spies on you is fundamentally SHIT.

Fuck Microsoft and more importantly, fuck bill gates

Through decades of good PR or something, he's managed to convince the world that he didn't make windows a powerhouse by monopolizing and crushing all competition. Now we have to deal with dystopian monitoring bullshit on our OS

Again, fuck bill gates and the Microsoft monster

I still have PTSD from when they changed explorer to have a ribbon interface.

Used to be able to tab and arrow key easily, now it is a fucking nightmare unless you use a mouse.

They will probably remove the old control panels too and force you to use the new settings app with half the features so they can say the UI is more consistent.

Your display settings will just have a single slider that says "bad" - "good" - "gooder".

    XP - Good
    Vista - Bad
    7 - Good
    8 - Bad
    10 - Good

Oh boy, I can't wait to see what kind of quality the next Microsoft OS has.

But in reality, my guess is it's going to be much closer to 10 than 10 was to 8, 8 was to 7, and so on. It'll probably be closer to the macOS model of incremental improvements. Basically the same way the transition from macOS 10.15 to 11 was somewhat arbitrary, and now they are just going from 11 to 12. Windows 12 will probably be sooner rather than later. All of that also means I think this might be the final death of paid major OS upgrades.

Honestly, this is really just a better and clearer naming convention for Windows 10 21H2 update, because consumers have no idea what the fuck "Anniversary Update" or "Fall Creators Update" or "20H1" or "build 19043.1052 with Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3740.0" or "KB5004476" even means, which can make troubleshooting hard. They're just taking a page out of Apple's book and continuously updating everyone to new experiences with clearer names, so every 6 months or year, you'll see a "welcome to windows 11.1" or "Welcome to Windows 12" update as they make minor or more major frontend and feature updates.

As usual I plan to wait a couple years for the kinks to be worked out and by that point I'm sure it will be fine.
