You try can Linux out without installing it(via live USB)? Check this guide but use Kubuntu instead of Ubuntu. You can also try it out via virtual machine.

Also try to switch to cross platform open source programs like these so you'll be able to use the same programs when you switch to Linux

Seems like they're ditching the whole "free windows with a watermark" loophole as well. I will never pay for windows so full Arch for me :shrug-outta-hecks:

as much as i love linux, people will just stick on their win10 machines, they held out for a decade on win xp, win 7, they'll hold old a bit longer on win 10
this is just the latest in microsoft's continual war against itself

i think they said they're gonna stop supporting 10 by 2025 or something like that. I wonder how hard they're gonna make it this time to ride 10 til the wheels fall off

linux doesn't have marketing and doesn't come preinstalled on devices so yeah most people will stick with their spyware but we're talking to those who really shouldn't, you know?

oh, for sure, didn't mean to detract from the point, sorry

for the people in the back: microsoft will screw you over every step of the way, pirating microsoft isn't putting a dent into anything, it's making microsoft software be the universal platform which is what they want; they would prefer everyone pirate windows and word to do their work than you install linux and use libre office because at the end of the day, they're the platform holders and you play the same role freemium players do in online MMOs

windows 8 was so garbage, it didn't come with drivers that officially supported the hardware on my craptop, so i had to use buggy 3rd party blobs that just so happen to freezelock the bugger every few days

i was supposed to use it to install all the crapware i needed for uni work, but ended up installing linux anyway, thanks microsoft

This is literally gonna sabotage so many industries because a lot of companies operate with older OS. Oh boy is Microsoft in a speed run to become the most hated company in america

Have they said anything about whether or not Windows 10 would continue to get feature updates? It's probably only going to be critical security updates for 10 moving forward.

Absolutely incredible that they told everyone that they needed a new device in the middle of a semiconductor shortage with no end on the horizon for several years.

Yup. Gamers and people with odd hardware are kinda stuck with certain things as well, just because there's no support for linux on things like Tobii eye trackers, or weird issues with G-Sync//FreeSync compatibility.

I would crack up if they declared all previous versions mothballed, and had a subtle update for all of the old O.S that would break it and demanded everyone update to the new one.

It probably isn't. I worked for a construction company that had several security breaches due to outdated software and it led to some headaches for the workers that I'm still salty about

If the hardware still does the job it should be kept. Updating because a software company is forcing you to will just create unnecessary waste, greenhouse gases, and use unnecessary labor.

How possible would it be for independent programmers to maintain an older version of windows, say 7, and keep it updated and safe to use? Yes yes I know switch to Linux but I'm just curious.

Windows 7 doesn't get any security updates whatsoever because Microsoft stopped supporting it and no one else can (closed source)

And it's in Microsoft best interests that everyone uses Windows 10/11 I mean how else are they gonna collect all that data about the users and serve them ads smh

So if you somehow manage to steal Windows 7's source code they will hunt you down :capitalist-mad:

I really do recommend Linux Mint with Cinnamon for those looking to switch from windows, there is no learning curve at all, it's a distro that is great for people who use their computer to do things and don't want an intrusive operating system getting in the way, from beginners to advanced users. I've been using Mint for about 8 years now and haven't looked back.

Set up a Mint/Cinnamon desktop for my mom a few years back and other than having to remind her to update from time to time it's been easy

Joe's Window Manager is even lighter weight than LXQt while still being fully customizable

        spoiler

it's the window manager for Puppy Linux, the famous fits-on-a-dvd linux distro, but there is no real need to use it as who's daily driver computer nowadays is from 2002?

Impressive, though I wish he'd show some more hardware intensive games. Also VR although I've heard that Proton has made it possible these days.

I had a run at gaming and working on Linux about 8 years ago and while it was the file system that really made it untenable (I don't throw things out and categorise using many dozens of partitions on RAID, so that's not really a standard linux use case) the sheer amount of fiddling I had to do to get games that "Ran easily" to work made me want to Anprim.

Nice to see it's a lot better now. May have to give it a go if Win 11 is as awful as it seems to be and I can find some way of cramming in a Windows Drive structure.
