I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for songs that aren't like weepy breakup fare but like just, grief songs. My examples are too obvious but I mean like, Danny Boy, Phil Ochs' When I'm Gone, Flogging Molly's If I Ever Leave This World Alive, Amazing Grace, etc, like songs that would be good for a wake. Any genre welcome, its not actually for a wake, just personal grieving
Gotta have high high hopes for livin'~
Hinna hina hah inna mimma ninna hibba~
I can recommend two songs by Sapphire called Never more and memories of you I can't listen to them anymore without entering a crying spiral of depression because of the death of someone i cared about that happened shortly before they started playing on my phone.
I can also throw in Everything is alright sung by Laura Shigihara
I'll leave this one in since it's not exactly what you're looking for but for me, listening to it helps me detach from the world for a short while and simply exist Demircan Demir: Bir Yol Senden Açık
OUR SIDE HAS TO WIN by Godspeed You! Black Emperor is like, sad beautiful instrumental
Hang On To Each Other might also work well
Is there a genre of music you really like, or have been wanting to explore? Sometimes grieving can be about just getting lost in music or appreciating music, not just listening to sad music
I tend to like old-timey tunes but I'm a fan of stuff from all round. Its tough because there's sort of two contradictory goals, I want music to distract me from the pain of loss but also to aid in creating a solemn mood appropriate for heavily emotional reflection.
Ok. I’d Recommend vocal jazz. Listen to some Aretha Franklin, maybe some Diana Krall, Cecile mclorin savant (not sure of spelling), Gretchen parlato, and check out Emmet Cohen’s YouTube channel for any vocal music. This might be the best of both worlds - old timey, but complex and interesting and modern
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yzNN3Zukl8 I listened to this one a lot the year I had to go to a bunch of funerals
"Keep Me In Your Heart," by Warren Zevon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4n2nyXg7fuU
death is real - mount eerie
idk if it’s uplifting but it’s not breakup fare
Agnes by Glass Animals is a grieving song and while it's got a more upbeat tune the content is very clearly not upbeat.
I'm embarrassed to admit it but I actually really like Frank Sinatra's "My Way."
