BBC is advising people to disregard what they have to say and stop talking to them immediately. BBC cannot link any account to the Chinese government, but suggest people to treat them as if they are agents.

A sprawling network of more than 350 fake social media profiles

Imagine writing that and thinking that's a bombshell. 350? Egads!

The point of the report isn't the numbers, it's the shock value. It's 1950s-style "is your neighbor a communist?" fearmongering with a fresh coat of paint. Get people to think that anyone, anywhere who doesn't repeat the propaganda could be one of them.

It's pretty apparent already on twitter, reddit, etc. Takes about 2 minutes for anyone who pushes back on anti-Chinese propaganda to get called a wumao or worse.

I run 3 to 4 times as many pro-China Reddit accounts daily by hand.

That's only slightly higher than the number of Skyrim builds I have on my 15 year old xbox 360.

      Very low energy. :cheeto-man:

This only makes my pro-China posting stronger.

Edit: In all honestly, after reading the article, I'm just left with the take-away that mainstream Social Media is really bad and increasingly useless for interfacing with the outside world. All I'm seeing is discussion of techniques that have become chronic within internet communities and how they bombard people with bullshit.

There's nothing particular to China about any of it. Just the comic inability to have sincere conversations on any of these platforms, because you're just going to get inundated with macro'd garbage.

watching China's rise has been fascinating. Their economic growth was an inevitability with their population size and the industrial capacity that comes with it. The west tries to pull their weight behind India but India's government is too corrupt and inept to grow at the same rate China has. Europe may become more hostile, but Europe is also growing less significant as the global south begins to play an increasingly bigger role. I think even the Soviet Union would have eventually fallen behind China if it were still around today.

There are still issues that China's government has and there's likely to be some economic issues as well, but the West is trying everything while China continues to excel.

India’s government is too corrupt and inept to grow at the same rate

Should India ever adopt communism I would think they would also see explosive growth and elimination of extreme poverty.

The fact that India, and Indonesia as well, with their massive populations and resources, and historically strong communist movements, didn't topple their bourgeois dictatorship is one of the true black marks in the history of communism- of course totally to blame for that is the UK and USA. Had they joined the rest of the "2nd world" or led the socialist movement within the 3rd, we'd be looking at a much better planet right now. And it was not at all impossible that it could have happened without western treachery. And yeah, the amount of people living in poverty globally would be drastically lower, not to mention a weaker west and more empowered and independent global south. This is largely not the fault of the communists in those countries, I want to stress. sigh, just another historic contingency of earth-saving proportions lost to capitalism and western fuckery

I’d definitely trigger the “low follower” criteria for bot characteristics cause I rarely comment and just use Twitter to follow news, maybe throw out a reading req/quote or a dunk every couple weeks.

Also the funniest response to “wolf warrior diplomacy” was Eric Li saying that it’d be like accusing US officials of “Rambo diplomacy” (which, gotta say, is hilarious and deeply true)

And just one more comment, at the end they were like “also the Chinese troll has a tell, his unusually poor grasp of the English language” lmao damn I didn’t know all non-native English speakers were trolls, thanks for the heads up BBC

I’m pro China because Xi locked me in a basement. He throws a piece of gabagool down here every now and then, so it’s not all bad. Also Sia’s down here, apparently Xi and Beyoncé share a basement

One of the narratives pushed by the network paints the US as having a poor human rights record. Posts from the fake accounts cite the murder of George Floyd among examples, as well as discrimination against Asians.

These Chinese bots do disgusting propaganda tactics like telling the truth and backing it up with evidence.

The people that are going to fall for this wholesale are the same dipshits that have Fallout plushies on their mantle and "Reefer Madness!" posters on their bedroom walls.

Brits and Americans' potential for cognitive dissonance is... staggering.
