“THERE were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.”

This is effectively science denial. They’re talking about the authoritarian personality, which is a well studied phenomenon. You’re not going to find any sufficiently large population that has no people with this personality, but any claims that it exists on both the left and the right without specifying that it’s significantly more prevalent on the right are dishonest and misleading.

Saint Andrewism recently put out a video on this and he talks about right wing authoritarianism. In like a 50 minute video, he spends a few minutes qualifying that he’s aware this personality is not exclusively right wing, but that they’re not completely equivalent and that’s not the subject of the video. Guess what like half the comments are about.

You know the 14 year olds who believe all the propaganda about Stalin committing cold blooded mass murder and still idolize him? Turns out those kids have a bit of an unhealthy power fantasy. Who knew?

Did they also look at the extremism of the center?

Do they ignore the violence of the capitalist class as political violence?

No because they tailored the definition of violence specifically around it.

For instance a child suffering from starvation being kept from accessing food by threat of the police using violence does not count as violence.

Stalin is evil!!! He celebrated the murder of kulaks who price gouge during a famine and rape widows for not being able to pay landlords

widows for not being able to pay landlords

Anyone have a good book excerpt relating to this? I think my response to anti-Bolshevism in the future will just be linking that quote and then saying "shut the fuck up".

    Came here to post that.

Authoritarianism has been the subject of scientific inquiry for nearly a century, yet the vast majority of authoritarianism research has focused on right-wing authoritarianism. In the present studies, we investigate the nature, structure, and nomological network of left-wing authoritarianism (LWA), a construct famously known as “the Loch Ness Monster” of political psychology.

Reason # 100000000 why science nerds need to learn humanities and social studies. Otherwise they're easily turned into ghouls for capital.

By centrist do they mean the center between the demonrats and the repugnicans, which is still reactionary. Or by center between Socialism and Capitalism, which is succdem social fascism?

It's NYT, I think they mean between the gop and the Dems. I wouldn't take that article too seriously either, it's just fun to throw it in the face of self described "rational centrist" types
