Wow. The commenters on his videos are mostly Japanese people. They're thanking him for telling their stories. "I am proud as Japanese that Japanese army evacuated residents of the island for they are survive. Anyone cant become to be winner at any war."

I would have assumed a strong section of sarcastic assholes mocking the shit out of him. What gives?

Isn't modern Japan still very nationalist/racist and not very critical of imperial Japan?

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that, as a whole, Japan is still a fairly right wing country, especially in its view of history.

Their conservative ruling Liberal Democractic Party holds monopoly on power and are constantly rewriting their high school history books to paint Japan's role in WWII in a more positive light. Their politicians including their Prime Minister still prays at the Yakusuni shrine, that houses over 1000 convicted war criminals. Just imagine German politicians rewriting history books and praying to dead Nazis, it would cause immense anger in Germany and throughout the Western World, but in Japan it's only slightly controversial.

Yakusuni shrine houses ALL Japanese war dead. It's like complaining that the US president prayed at Arlington National Cemetery.

Yes, all military are buried there. The Japanese are still digging up beaches in the Pacific and transferring the bones to Yakusuni for burial. It's not like they're going to War Criminal Cemetery and cackling while they have a Black Mass in honor of Unit 731.

That's why China and Korea still feels their apology for their WWII crimes is half assed, as long as Convicited War Criminals are treated the same as other war dead
