I think it has more to do with BBC and other MSM being big on idpol. Mainstream discourse considers idpol as leftism. Just look at what "progressive" DemocracyNow! and Goodman think of Kamala the cop, they are giddy over a black face in power, like they did for Obama

        https://www.democracynow.org/2020/8/13/kamala_harris_stands_on_the_shoulders

DemocracyNow! is a big gateway for angry libs moving left, it's no wonder the US left is in such bad shape.

The twitter journalist who uncovered this is pretty interesting...

    Background:

"Oz Katerji is a journalist, writer, political analyst and filmmaker. He has been a contributor for Channel 4 News, ITV News, BBC World Service, TRT World, VICE News, IBTimes, UNDP, Al-Jazeera English, UNRWA, Daily Star, and the High Times.

"His publications include VICE documentaries "Warlords of Tripoli" (Associate Producer), "Lebanon's Hash Farms" (Host), and "Lebanon's Illegal Arms Dealers" (Associate Producer).

"He also served as Project Coordinator for Help Refugees UK to assist with the enormous humanitarian effort and save the lives of refugees arriving on Lesvos, Greece.

"Oz Katerji is a fierce critic of the Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad and has earned a reputation as the bane of pro-Assad apologists after he castigated Max Blumenthal, Ali Abunimah, and Rania Khalek. Still haunting them to this day."

And here he is accusing Jeremy Corbyn of war crimes.

I bet it's one if their producers friends or a friend if a friend they happened to know who lives in Belarus. News people often get people they already know.

The BBC is riddled with crypofascists these days. One of the producers of Question Time responsible for picking the audience got caught liking BNP & National Front stuff on social media & regularly seeds the audiences with actual fascists & hyper-conservative activists and even politicians claiming to be ordinary members of the public. But apparently it's all just an oopsie-dasie so that's fine.

Why do so many Nazis (and sex predators, come to think of it) have that wispy, sunken-eyed look, like they spend too much time near Lovecraftian tomes?

Nothing pisses off Eastern European fascists more than Communist iconography and nostalgia, and Belarus is full of that. Lukashenko was a member of the CPSU and is in coalition with the CPB, who is the largest party in the country. Of course all these freaks would be coming out for the pro-west Belarusian protests.
