I really like it, honestly. IMO it's made discussions much better. If there are chuds we can always just dunk on them in the replies and wreckers get banned anyways. But at least this way people don't get to just "downvote" any opinion they disagree with, preventing any sort of chilling effect. It's one thing that really makes this place different from :reddit-logo:. And you can tell which opinions are "controversial" cuz those'll have less upvotes and more replies.

I've honestly found it more effective to go into a post and say "bring back downvotes" than it ever was to actually downvote it

Downvotes are bad and it's good they were gotten rid of.

Tbh I think making upvote numbers hidden should be the next step. The problem with downvotes is that if a comment got downvoted enough users took it as an opportunity to dogpile, even when the comment was good but it wasn't what the people wanted to hear. Upvotes can have the same problem, where people post stuff they want upvoted incl. cheap dunks and stuff.

idk. The less :vote: driven posting the better IMO.

Disagree, I think upvotes are beneficial overall. If a bunch of people are agreeing with a chuddy take, I'd like to know. Lack of downvotes imo already solves the dogpiling issue.

Edit: also, I think it would drive more dogpiling because people would hop on with "dunking" comments where they otherwise would have just upvoted the opposite opinion and left.

I like upvotes, it's nice being able to acknowledge people and the comments they posted even if I don't have anything to add. like a lightweight "thanks for posting that" or "solidarity, comrade" button

It’s literally “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” as part of the site’s design. We have enough negativity just living in and talking about modern capitalism. Given that so much social media relies on addictive usage patterns and heightened “locked in” emotional states, it’s nice that this site has managed to get by so much on positive reinforcement.

Obviously, many of us are compulsive users and there’s still an element of “experience your trauma in the same place you get your comfort” going on here, but that seems less common nowadays. A lot of the users who were blatantly using the site for self-harm and doomscrolling all day have moved onto greener pastures (such as hanging out in Discord servers where they talk shit about how awful the site is).

I think the core site culture is still very wholesome and social. Lack of downvotes helps keep things less combative and lets the users who enjoy that side of things just chill. For anyone who doesn’t give a shit and would rather have an anonymous shitposting forum, I will point out that:

    1. These users invested in social aspects of the site tend to be the ones self-organizing and doing cool stuff like movie nights, anime nights, the zine, and making high-quality OC memes
    2. What you want already (kind of) exists over at https://dismantle.capital/

So yes, I’ve enjoyed the removal of downvotes. But I enjoyed TERFmas much more :leslie-shining:

PS we need a :feinberg-shining: once someone gets back to maintaining emotes on the reg

It’s a chan with heavier moderation run by some of the people from the old Discord. It’s still technically in development but leftypol found it months ago. They’re trying to do the chan thing in a way that isn’t just “say slurs and make fun of minorities”. Not my cup of tea either way but it exists

Its been O.K. imo. CHUDs are not smart enough to do any real damage here and get scared off / banned after a few posts, but I still want something stupid like a 'downvote allowance' for just those extra-special :chefs-kiss: garbage posts that occasionally prop up here.

I think it's great makes discussions better and discourages the reddit debate bro behaviour

It's good. Prevents dogpiling, but we can still gauge community opinion by looking at ratios, etc.

Edit: some people are advocating removing upvotes, but I think that would have the opposite effect. Now people just vote for the opinion in a discussion that they agree with. Hiding the counts would encourage people to make their opinions visible by piling onto controversial opinions with their own (short, dunking) comments, which IMO could quickly get toxic.

If I disagree strongly, my options are to either upvote a downstream response or respond and engage myself. Both are better options than downvoting, and healthier for the tone of the community

haven't missed it, as much as it would be a nice tool for bullying chuds and burying wreckers, seeing 50 ppb replies is way more satisfying and has to be more demoralizing for them

Not sure if it makes discussions better but it probably does allow for more people to say something where they wouldn't have previously

Upvotes are still there, which means people are still chasing that high
