:anti-italian-action:
Reminder that before 1850 most "italians" didn't give a shit about "Italy" as a whole, and hated their neighbours with passion, as they still do today but now they were forced to share language as their local languages were dismissed/denied or even prohibited by the central state.
Tell me about cultural erasure. Fucking Garibaldi
The two genders. There's another commenter on here saying they should call it Garibaldi day
Columbus was briefly imprisoned for being such an asshole when he returned to Italy (mostly for his treatment of the other Italians, but also for being an asshole to the natives), sadly he got out early because of favors from higher-ups.
My point is, even Italians thought Columbus was kind of a nut-sack.
Where shall we place Indigenous Peoples' Day? I know it! Well place it on the day marking the start of their genocide!
The original effort was to turn Columbus Day into Indigenous Peoples Day, and that has succeeded in some places. NYC making their own, different IPD would be kind of dumb, in that regard. This is dumb too, of course.
This is the inevitable result from letting both-sideism fester and normalize.
If my family was German I wouldn't throw a piss fit over not getting to celebrate Hitler Day.
How about get rid of Columbus day and bring in a day for a different Italian
In honor of this holiday, we'll all watch that one episode of The Sopranos.
You jest but I'm texting my brother for his HBO password as we speak.
