Seriously it's bad. Like I get the point is the characters are shitheads but still...

Yeah some of the early stuff is genuinely hard to watch due to their treatment of the trans character. IIRC one of the writers actually said it's one of the few things he regrets about the earlier seasons.

i like the show but i genuinely don't think i could rewatch the first season today. iasip is always kind of edgy, but they didn't even have a point to try to make at the start. no danny devito either.

Would I be missing anything good if I skipped to season 2? So far the show is not clicking for me and if season 1 is kinda meh then that would explain it.

I don't think so personally, there's not a lot of serialization going on, but someone who's seen the first season more recently might remember if there are any good ones.

Once the show gets rolling it becomes pretty self referential but that probably not til after season 5 or so

If I recall the first season is really short. It really comes into its own. In season 3 but it has the signs of getting there for the second

    Season 1 is rough.

Between that episode and the one about how Dee is dating a potentially handicapped dude, it's just edge for the sake of edge.

Show gets a million times better in Season 2 when Devito joins

Skip to season 2 or 3 it's wayyyyy better later on when the characters are more fleshed out

They've apologized for it because its so bad, despite being fully edgey comedy people. It really sticks out. They return to the character and its a little better, but still iffy

Yeah, great show overall, but that episode and a few of the subsequent episodes with the trans character (played by a cis woman, of course), and nearly unwatchable for the reasons other people mention on the comments.

I can only guess that in their minds they were setting up Mac's storyline, but it's extremely transphobic and not cool. They have since made apologies about that episode on particular, and the show is much better in more recent seasons.

They weren't setting anything up. It was 2006. Those were normal jokes then.

It honestly gets a lot better. It also gets a lot more sensitive to those issues, one character does end up not being straight.
