Sitting in the corner of the Y for eight hours during the summer watching the 15-year-old councilor try to talk some other kid out of shoving crayons up his nose is the same thing as wearing fancy jewelry
Bourgeois is when your parents work and the more your parents work the more bourgeois you are
I am very smart
I spent the whole summer at camp, but I was working there. For well below minimum wage, thx BSA!
For boy scout camps I know they aren't doing great financially. If the management was less blisteringly incompetent it wouldn't be so bad, but they always throw away money on flights of fancy to gather more campers rather than invest in the stuff they already have.
I wish it was just things that extreme. Buying a speaker system is an absurd waste of money when the food is what is driving people away.
Look at that bougie larper who had summer as a kid. I grew up in a real proletarian family and my parents couldn't afford that kind of fancy luxury seasons for me or my 37 siblings.
How many of your 37 siblings died fighting for your local lord? :ypg-brace:
The only summer camp I ever went to was with the scout and that was a week of merit badge training.
Those were the shit. A week of rifle/shotgun shooting, lighting stuff on fire, hiking in the woods, and hanging out with your friends still sounds like a great time even as an adult. All paid for with fucking popcorn sales
Check this out. It basically is adult summer camp. Week long classes in stuff like blacksmithing, herbal medicine even story telling. I haven't had the chance to go yet but it looks really cool.
Although I do like the idea of learning more advanced skills such as those, there's something to the simplicity of just learning some neat things for merit badges that this lacks for me. I just want to weave lanyards and identify 20 local plant species, ya know?
Is summer camp a rural thing? I thought it was something made up for tv till like highschool.
It was like, summer camp and middle class homeownership were lart of thr same idealized past you know?
Is summer camp a rural thing?
I grew up rural and I assumed it was for people with money who don't actually live out in the country.
Baptist church summer camps are a thing, even where I live, where you send your kids to be indoctrinated with hateful ideology.
I know about this because, uhh yeah I was sent to them
Much bigger in North America than anywhere else, and maybe more of a thing in Canada even.
Day camps (which are basically babysitting services) are mostly city and suburban things. My mom stuck me and my siblings in a ton of them, not because she worked, but because we annoyed her and it was the only way to get peace and quiet when school is out
Actual summer camps are also largely a suburban thing, I think.
My summers were staying inside wondering why I wasn't good enough
does it count as summer camp if you do it through some weird girl scouts knock-off church thing?
For a few years I went to a day camp thing run by the Boys and Girls Club.
summer camp? you mean the cheapest possible vacation other than just going to a motel for a week and doing nothing?
synthesis: you went to a ultra religious christian summer camp and it was a horror movie.
half of those camps are funded and run by unions lol. good tell who is petit bourgeoisie larping as a prole, and gatekeeps!
I got a scholarship to a bougie summer camp when I was younger by lying in an essay. Shit was cool as hell, but yeah the class divide was very apparent
Lol at all the people here who got sent to ultra christian summer camps. I never had to go but my first real job was grounds keeper at one of them.
