so like two weeks into his campaign, he says the thing and is denounced widely. his campaign says he "misspoke". this was later upgraded into a full apology. later, after his political career was a smouldering crater, he authored a book retracting the apology and accused the GOP of not standing by him and the "media" of being full of bullies.
[dumpster fire sets fire to own dreams] -> "whoops." -> "i was wrong and i apologize." -> "i am not sorry, fuck all of you." -> [dies of cancer]
i don't know that there exists a single polar opposite of a "redemption arc", but this has got to be one of the archetypal alternatives.

I mean this is true in the sense that it was a massively dumb thing to say that destroyed his political carrier and he probably deeply regrets having said it.
