The first season is rough, and the second isn't a whole lot better. It picks up in the 3rd, and never slows.

The showrunner for the 1st and 2nd seasons was a sexist ass who caused Gates McFadden to quit until he left. Roddenberry was a visionary, but he kept sticking his nose into things early on, when he should have been leaving the project alone. Things improved as his health failed, though his lawyer also reportedly made a nuisance of himself.

Fun bit of sci-fi nerd trivia: the writer for Code of Honor sold the same premise to the showrunners of Stargate SG-1 for the season 1 episode "Emancipation (S01E04)". To absolutely no one's surprise, the story is just as fucking terrible in a blatant US Air Force propaganda piece as it was in the context of FALGSC.

The Binar episode was reportedly adapted from a script for the aborted Star Trek: Phase II series,. So the age of its writer shows, especially with lines like "Everyone knows that jazz and blondes don't mix."

Yeah, ENT was awful, and finished off whatever progress the franchise had made that Voyager hadn't already shat upon.
