Fuck, you'd think these people are defending a small indy studio with all the "support the devs" bullshit so many are replying with.

People act like Zero Mission and Samus Returns weren't new games aside from re-telling the story of older ones. They weren't HD re-releases or ports, they were just vaguely based on other games.

This is no joke. Back in the day, lots of people ran pirated copies of MS-DOS on PC clones from manufacturers who hadn't licensed it. The pirated copies helped make the OS wildly popular, but the developers never benefited from the exposure of their software running on alternative hardware whatsoever. Who knows whatever happened to that little rinky-dink company after that, but MS-DOS is long dead now.

have there actually been any instances of a large game studio being paralyzed or changing what kind of games they make because of piracy?

The famous example is Ensemble Studios (Age of Empires) but I'm pretty sure they went bankrupt because they were bought by Microsoft and ran into the ground.

Well music is mostly a DRM-locked internet subscription service now where people don't own portable copies of music and artists get paid less. But there are other factors in that too. But less piracy is one reason to switch to online subscriptions, the other being you can charge people money more often lmao.

Yeah but musicians also get kinda screwed over from the streaming services as well since it is a 'better deal' for the customer but they make like a penny per stream. It still costs about as much as buying an album every month too.

3ds piracy was amazing at one point. If your 3ds told Nintendo you owned a game, you could download that game straight from Nintendo's servers without any sort of verification that you actually owned it

Yeah I'm sure the massive horde of (checks notes) ...people emulating Switch hardware? is going to make any fucking difference.

All pirates of Metroid Dread are not Metroid fans and should be shunned. Their motto has always been "I'm not buying til I try and there's no demos anymore" but in this case if you wouldn't buy it you don't deserve to play it period.

oh shit oh fuck no don't shun me from the "fan" community no please :negative:

Honestly, at this point doing social media campaigns against piracy is probably more effective than sending legal nastygrams to /dev/null on some VPN provider.

Still lame and pathetic :pathetic: , but as someone sitting on about 4000 nintendo roms, I get it.

Edit: There's also a sort of retro game market of vintage consoles and cartridges, with some original media of rare games becoming exceptionally valuable. The collectors of the retro gaming market are in the same class position as the homeowners of American suburbanization. I absolutely expect them to post cringe in favor of their corporate overlord.
