Was this recent? With the recent wave of banning for profit teaching many teaching contractors were more or less forced home.

I'll have to look into it again.

I'm torn between going through the slog of Law school so I can become a labor lawyer, or saying "fuck it I'm out" and bouncing to China to teach speech and debate. I saw a lot of those positions too, and I just so happen to have a background in it.

It's never too late to go back. I would know. Finally got my degree on the wrong side of 30 after basically failing out the first time. Graduated magna cum laude this time around and so glad I went back.

Well I have people who depend on me and no one to support me while I go back so that's highly unlikely. Especially because rent in this town is about 4x what you'd be able to get in assistance.

Damn, I'm sorry there's not more infrastructure for that kind of second chance. I saved up enough working in the service industry that I could afford it with assistance and loans, but I didn't have anyone but myself and my cat to worry about.

It's all good, I took my UI during the pandemic and got out of service. I'm doing engineering work using my charm and 2 semesters of college lol. Pay's alright, but it's still below living wage in my area

like a decade ago, i heard some top tier faculty recounting two different academic trips to China. these were two white women, garden variety social democrats that are highly productive researchers in applied ecology (an earnest but hardscrabble field) that took two completely different trips in different years touring different institutions in China.

they both said they got to see these amazing facilities with lots of resources / support available for researchers, like they were being actively recruited to come there. they each asked, "well, what are the research questions you want investigated?" and the answer was always some form of "that is up to the research scientist."

neither of them could wrap their heads around having that much institutional and material support coupled with the full freedom to investigate precisely what they wanted (not beholden to or competing with others in their fields for the limited resources of various foundations/funders or having to spend countless hours on accountability/impact metrics for reporting).

before all the covid shit and the weird cooling effects of sinophobia ramped up, there was a program where i could literally go get a PhD in china from a huge list of universities, where all of my classes would be in english, i would get housing/stipend enough to not have to work, and it would cost me nothing nor would i have to commit to working there for any amount of time after graduating. i just had to like get good grades and not do crimes.

i told some chuddy grad student i knew about it and even he was like, "what the hell." i told him they are going to make us look like cave people within a few decades.

Do you remember the program? I’ve got one for teaching English abroad, but getting some classes done sounds even better.

it was an offering to the university i work at under some "Bilateral Program" and open to faculty, staff, and students of my university, which at the time housed a "Confucius Institute". basically, a group on my campus would help someone here apply for the scholarship which is funded by the chinese government (https://www.campuschina.org/universities/index.html). i'm sure it was available through tons of universities.

all that collaboration/facilitation was shut down during trump though. my university pulled the plug because the DoD threatened to withhold committed and future research funds to any institution hosting a Confucius Institute, which scared the cowards in administration into booting them after making an apology to the CI for being good partners that opened up doors for students and research and committing to not being sinophobic.

To be clear - actual spies working for US intelligence, not the kind of corporate and intellectual knowledge-sharing this article is concerned with.

A bunch of undercover CIA agents or collaborators in China got headshoted in broad daylight like and like 30+ have been either killed or dissappeared in the last decade

even in this article they admit that this program has only stopped a couple cases of wire fraud and failure to disclose conflicts of interests.... like uhh who cares? is that really worth making a whole new discrimination machine so we can grab a couple Chinese guys who forgot to declare their remittance checks?

of course it's because stopping spies isn't the real reason for this, its per usual American policy, theatric racism so we look "tough" on random people of Chinese descent

I love how the title implies that there are dangerous Chinese spies out there

But government officials have become increasingly suspicious that scientists like Dr. Hu are exploiting the openness of American institutions to steal sensitive taxpayer-funded research at the behest of the Chinese government.

    Amazing

I'm sure there's still leftover budget from Operation Paperclip. Chinese scientists should just say they used to work for the Nazis.

Americans seem to have some obsession with the idea of infiltrators not considering the fact that most US hunts for infiltrators have been more disruptive than any infiltrator could ever be

perhaps the purpose wasn't really to find infiltrators but instead to curtail working class organization, in which case mission accomplished
