I can understand the lib mindframe that criticizes communism. What I can't understand is defending the people who were so bad, that the workers had to kill them and change governments. That's kind of a red flag outside of CIA coups.

Libs love their Great Man Theory and believe that everything was fine in Russia until the evil wizard Lenin hypnotized the hapless masses into overthrowing their rightful rulers.

It's like how they act as if the Holocaust sprang solely from the machinations of Hitler and wasn't the inevitable conclusion to terminal-stage capitalism architected by a capitalist ruling class seeking to preserve its own power and carried out with the aid of millions of willing collaborators.

fascism is a loser ideology. for these guys he's the best because he was stabbed in the back by the forces of judeobolshevik liberal modernity. the fact that he probably could have done any number of things differently to avert revolution is not a mark against him.

the appeal honestly alludes me. the guy who instigated revolt by being a dogshit, delusional administrator, or the guy who folded to a clique of useless liberals? which one is the guy these fascists are rooting for? because both are supremely unimpressive

I guess it makes sense since the fact that one dipshit is all it takes to lose it all is yet another mark against monarchy (ignoring all the mistakes of the past couple of tsars which led up to his reign).

first, I strongly suggest people here don’t get worked up over something randoms say on the internet. It’s not worth it. Join a book club or something, like the Capital reading group we’re currently having.

Second, if our monarchist friend insists, let them know that having your best fleet sailing half way across the globe for months just to be sunk by the Japanese in a single afternoon automatically puts whoever in charge of running the country into the loser category.

Fair enough. I noticed that you’ve been trying to get yourself worked up by random internet posts lately. Hope you’re doing well, and feel free take a step back when needed.

I agree with commenter too though, be careful with this stuff. Theres a certain type of brain poisoning you do when you indulge reading random dummies political takes.

True, but to be honest that sentence should be above all dunk tank posts. Dunking is fine and can be fun, I enjoy it, but it isn't worth devoting any real energy to.

I think this is different. Gorby was an anti-communist who rose to power through opportunism. He was very competent, it's just that he was a POS who wanted to tear things down for his own benefit and for his neoliberal friends.

Nicholas on the other hand was an incompetent buffoon. It would be more like idolizing a communist who really sucks at communism.

Imagine if one of Trump's kids became a king. The guy was incredibly lazy and spoiled. He spent his time taking strolls around his royal duck pond and getting drunk on sherry. Just an overall dull person who responded to every letter asking for orders with a "yeah ok do whatever."

He was the last king of Russia before getting overthrown by a coalition. There's a transcript of a phone call when coalition soldiers started capturing St. Petersburg where a Russian army captain is trying to tell Nic II there's just no guys left. Nic II is saying something like "just get more troops, we have a lot, right?" and the army guy is like "We don't have anyone left to spare"

The Bolsheviks gained most of their initial popularity through protesting WW1. They were the anti-war organization. Tsar Nicolas II was callous and didn't care

It's something I vaguely remember from Trotsky's book "History of the Russian Revolution." I don't remember exactly where it's brought up, probably the earlier chapters. It might have been a telegram too, something like that.

Not really an Eli5 but Fall of Eagles is an interesting dramatization that I would say is soft on him and still makes him look awful.

As a bonus it comes with Patrick Stewart playing Lenin which is great because Patrick Stewart is also a socialist so you know he went into this role with a positive outlook on him unlike a lot of the rest of hollywood would have.

It's slow in parts by modern standards but still pretty watchable.

There's a reason there's a legitimate discussion over whether or not murdering his children was the right move.

Not generally a sign of a good leader that there's a pretty compelling argument for wiping out the entire bloodline.
