Every month or two I'll get a message from some libertarian or Elon Musk nerd. They'll try to be sneaky about it like an island boy Jehovah's witness, but for some reason they're convinced that I want to help them buy an island. Despite most of my profile being angry Marxism and a juche shrine to my dog, with my $50 living room furniture clearly in the background.
They all want to rule a Little St. James fiefdom with an iron fist, but none of them have the money to buy the island so they've devised something between patronage and pyramid scheme. I've been to reddit meetups and oof. An island full of them. u/Violentacrez, the r/jailbait guy, was just a normal schmuck at Dallas meetups.
This is the first time I've spent more than three years in the same country and speaking the local tongue fluently enough to talk to people beyond ordering food. They were always the place where everyone is some kind of nerd who speaks English, and the alternative online communities at that time were SomethingAwful/4chan/9gag/Chive. All worse options if you're a digital nomad.
