I come from a relatively privileged background, and never had to either kiss ass or work retail/food service, which are the only places hiring since I have no degree.

Also, I really don't wanna give myself covid and risk Long Covid, since my family won't literally be destitute if I don't get a job immediately, but I probably will get sick immediately given the case surge here in CA.

Maybe warehouse work? More exposure than wfh, but less covid risks than customer facing jobs. Only need hs degree and warehouses are often placed along mass transit lines

Alternatively, you could apply to UPS or USPS? You'll get into physical shape along the way, but both are union and pay fairly well after some amount of time. Amazon FC may need to be your "foot in the door" though, since I figure they're a bit more competitive.
I used to work helping people find jobs, and USPS jobs are the things that everyone wanted. Definitely give it a shot if you can.
Someone I know now passed the test for a USPS job and said there's actually a waitlist to actually get the job itself. I'd never heard of that in the past, but be aware that might be a thing
I've worked at Amazon before (edit: here's my AMA about it). The worst part about it is peak, which they're towards the end of rn I believe, but peak is also when they hire, as they're often overstaffed the rest of the year. Personally, I would not be willing to do another peak, but I would consider going back if I could do part time, although I think that can be harder to get. Otherwise, if I could get on in the off season and quit before peak, that would work too and would be pretty funny. Tbf, you can make decent money because of the overtime pay (and not having time to spend it) but imo 60 hour weeks are not worth it, not unless you're desperate.
I will say that warehouse work seems like a good fit based on your priorities. Ime, warehouses are far enough removed from customers that they don't care about how you look, and also don't really expect you to pretend like you give a shit. Warehouses also tend to be pretty big, so you can avoid having too much contact with people (which is a pro and a con I guess). It's also not a bad way to get into shape, better to get exercise on the clock than pay for a gym imo. Oh but one major downside is that a lot of warehouses are particular about what goes in and out (and have metal detectors), so you may not be able to listen to music or have your phone on you.
Maybe skip Amazon but I'd take a look around and see if there's other stuff available.
Thanks for the info. I don't know, not having to deal with customers, or even other people much, might actually make this a really good job while I transition and am super self conscious. Also as a Big Progressive Tech Company I could probably raise a stink if they misgender me constantly lol. Can't hurt to give it a shot I suppose

I'm already in a pretty expensive area so I've just been looking for local listings. The problem is I just personally don't feel comfortable applying for something I'm not already 100% sure I know how to do (which is something I gotta work on) because I've just internalized the assumption that there's no such thing as paid training anymore and you can basically be fired instantly without cause even when employed.

Small businesses (eugh) often need people to do that, it could be worth checking any nearby small businesses that interest you and don't seem to be run by a horrible wannabe tyrant. For example an independent online vinyl store near me was looking for someone to basically just catalogue and spreadsheet stuff. Won't be likely to be much more than minimum wage, but it fits your criteria.

I don't know anything about this industry, but have you looked into trucking? I know that the industry is super exploitative of beginners but also they are desperate for drivers too. Alone in a truck making money and not being bothered might not be so bad, and they might even pay for your CDL if you shop around. Might be worth looking into?
I've had several truckers in my family, but I get bored very easily and also smonk weed so I don't think that would be a good option for me lol
i recently heard such a fucked up story about the trucking industry. oh it was on fresh air.
basically there are tons of people with CDL licenses who are not working as truckers because the industry is so fucked up. and getting funded to get your CDL turns you into like some kind of indentured servant. and the work conditions are atrocious. sounds not worth it. i have considered it in the past but it sounds like it's just getting worse and worse.
evening/night cleaning can work if you can put up with the process of doing it, usually involves interacting with zero people and management doesn't give a shit as long as it gets done. Can be really exploitative though, have had people just not pay me before lmao
If you can find construction work it might be a good idea.
