Mobile seems to make up about 60% of web browsing that's per 2020 Google analytics data.
But also that probably shifts quite a bit depending on platform.
Yes, make phone memes!!
I am also a desktop guy, I use social media on a 4k screen with an extra side monitor. I hate the mobile web, I will never leave my desk
But I have been making vertical videos for about 5 or 6 months now and it's getting way way more views than my horizontal videos.
You make some great shit, and a lot of shitposty funny meme stuff that would be great for YouTube Shorts and Tiktok.
I double-post like 95% of my videos on both YouTube and Tiktok
I make primarily video game videos and a bunch of them have left agitprop at the end, and some are just left agitprop like these:

https://www.tiktok.com/@serlavarock/video/7026532161226345734
Just go back into all your video files,
- set them to 1080x1920 (which is vertical)
- squish the layers and shit around to fit
- You can get away with zooming in only like 2x or 2.5x instead of 3x.
- 3x just about fills the frame, 2x has big black bars but you can stick words and shit there.
- Or you can put nothing there, people don't always care
- Anything under 60s and vertical is automatically a Short on YouTube
- TikTok has a much longer limit than 60s, i don't even know what it is
- TikTok has a mechanic where you can like, use a popular audio track and put your own video on it, which seems to boost your shit if it's a popular "sound"
Some madlads even just make the video sideways and publish to Shorts and Tiktok, I've seen a few of those. People just turn their phones. Can be annoying though.
So anyway, the majority of my content is literally lower effort than yours, not as funny, and not as original.
But I published this one this morning: https://www.tiktok.com/@serlavarock/video/7055661297915989294 4.5k views and counting
this one yesterday: https://www.tiktok.com/@serlavarock/video/7052629531953351941
21k views38k views, still trickling upthis one in October: https://www.tiktok.com/@serlavarock/video/7021357688013524229?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1 23k views
These two in September: youtube.com/watch?v=rUNWdresAOw 16k views https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAd5BOc-Khk 13k views
and so on.
I started with YouTube Shorts but my buddy recommended I just upload the same stuff on TikTok. Tiktok is a lot more fun honestly, and the algorithm is less weird and temperamental than YouTube. People comment way more on TikTok, they Like more, and they follow more. On YouTube people don't want to gum up their subscriptions too much, and the comments have such a bad reputation.
TikTok also just tells you which specific people liked your content or followed you. You can click on them and follow them back, or follow someone who liked your shit, and they'll often follow you back. I usually only follow people who also make content, and I have to make sure it's not chud ass content.
So I have almost 500 followers on TikTok but only like 59 on YouTube so far
I would love to see your shit popping up on TikTok and YouTube shorts :heart-sickle:
I find it refreshing to see memes like that in desktop aspect ratios but I think we're in the minority and if you want the memes to spread among zoomers and even just most people then yeah you'll need to make them mobile-first tbh
Synthesis: square memes that get cropped or letter/pillarboxed no matter the platform
I refused to finally get a smart phone until like 2015
I held out till 2020. I'm also a bit older, why the fuck is everything a touch screen now?
I have nothing against them as a concept and they certainly have their uses, I just want my goddamn mechanical 10-key back on my cash register :I-was-saying:
Because its cheaper and not so horrible nobody wants to use it. That is the only reason, literally. Printing electronics is now cheaper than making anything with any shape to it.
If anything, you'll probably find some unique things you can do with a vertical aspect ratio. Do what makes you happy though, that's what's important
I didn't, but comparisons between two things, where the top of the screen is oje thing and tbe bottom is another are really easy to follow on mobile. Text can work fantastically on tall displays! I remember some study saying that people are able to read longer on tall displays because it requires less eye movement.
I'm no film person but I'm sure there are some unique opportunities to be found if you do some experimentation.
Apparently that's why disco elysium chose the narrow text frame.
Yes if you want to get the zoomers.
You'll get a lot more views probably
another vote for phone aspect ratio since many ppl who want to repost would rather do it on their temporary story rather than part of their main content so it can add to virality! Side note... I really want an isolated audio of Anthony fantano saying "Capitalism, it's not good" with an explosion. I can prob get him to post it too if the meme hits right, someone I know is on his tik tok fyp
You could probably use ostonox’s voice neural networks and break into the streaming space.
I mean normal screen ratio things are still around but I do think it makes it easier to share to new phone platforms like tik tok and ig. You could maybe compromise and use a 1:1 aspect ratio that might work across both?
Im not a big fan of phone aspect ratios either but some of my clients have pretty successful internet presences and do literally everything on the phone
No i work in the music industry. These are mostly mid level musicians that manage their own online presence
Yeah, Theyre also mostly 25 and under and in my experience I find a lot of people around that age are used to just using their phones instead of laptops for media work.
