The US already has sonic weapons. The way they work also doesn't fit at all either for this story, or Havana syndrome. The idea that the Chinese navy could drive a sonic weapon close enough to an American aircraft carrier to crash a plane is patently ridiculous.

They'd probably state the intended purpose is something else, it just coincidentally causes blindness or deafness. Bit like with white phosperous.
