This is how I feel during any sort of Math lecture. I always have to go through it all at my own pace later and half the battle is just deciphering what the fuck they're trying to convey half the time.
I will be so glad when my Stats course is over. Just one more week babyyy
if it makes you feel any better, i have a math degree and i still find stats hard to think about. shit's kinda wild and the way it's taught is usually subpar. you're doing well to get through it at any pace.
I don't think I suggested doing it without any notation, just that we settled on a system by historical accident
Math notation is constantly evolving, early systems were very clunky and hard to use.
I have to do calculus and shit for my stats lectures and its a nightmare. I can never understand the first time and then I have to spend ages afterwards looking up what the hell the equations and letters mean

Is the bottom the gamma function? It looks similar to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma_function#cite_ref-27
Yes, it is proof of Stirling's formula through Euler-Maclaurin formula.
The proof of the intermediate step is left as an exercise to the reader.
I love it when a book explicitly tells you a step is "obvious", almost as if to call you an idiot for not seeing it.
