"Why is everyone in the West pretending not seeing these horrors?

I mean ... is 24/7 news coverage not enough? Basically every political issue in the US has been chucked out the window to focus entirely on Ukraine. Short of joining the war and starting a nuclear holocaust, what are they expecting Americans to do?

Yeah you can say a lot about how this is handled but if there’s one thing that it’s not lacking it’s attention in the west

I understand when people see things like this and say "Why won't someone do anything about this?! Why don't they care?", because when I see things like this I also want them to stop, and it can be easy to ignore other factors like how nuclear nations can act with impunity as long as they act first. Obviously there's nothing really more anyone can do past the sanctions that are happening, but the sentiment is understandable so I try to not to judge them so harshly.

Because the goal of sock puppet account crap like that is to warm people up to western invasion.

Feels odd to have to say it on this site but you do not, in fact, “have to give it to” Vladimir Putin

I'm curious as to what flavor of leftism most on this site ascribe to? This whole thing has brought me closer to this site tbh--other leftist communities are trying to justify it all

This is a Left Unity Site. So if you support, however critically, AES as preferable to US imperialism, you are cool.

MLs/MLMs of various stripes are probably dominant, but we've got anarchists, bookchinites, left coms, eco-socialists, neo-kauts, even a trot or two.

And a lot of "whatever the fuck works for specific conditions"

Only pro US rad libs, and Pol Pot/Shining Path types get any real shit, though I think maybe we're a bit hard on the Trots sometimes.

Vlad doing the wrong thing for the right reasons.

The coup in Ukraine that threatened to lead into joining NATO and installing supersonic missiles within minutes of Moscow was an existential threat to the national leadership. The response and terrifying rate of escalation has been nightmarish.

But this isn't just Putin ratcheting pressure unilaterally. No more than Khrushchev acted unilaterally in the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Really depend on what "it" is. I'd quite enjoy it if someone gave him a bullet, depending on the velocity of delivery. I'd be okay with someone giving him severe covid, too. I try to avoid great man theory and its foolish inversion in mad man theory, but Putin's capacity to construct the specific monstrosity he's built is hard to imagine from another single Russian politician.

Fair enough, though they're all over the place with the aesthetics. I think Wagner Group has an Austin Red Guard chapter, too.

One of the most cursed sentences I've ever heard.

Also the Wagner group leader has Nazi tatoos, bit they seem to be all over the place with pagan and Norse mythology stuff too. Why are fascists like this?

Vague fetishisation of anything and everything "warrior".

My favourite is these so called warriors always end up being the opposite of that. During the failed Wagner deployment to Mozambique, I think about 25% of them left because they couldn't handle the weather/local conditions.

They seem to fight much better in central Africa though, don't know why. It's not like the local climate is any more hospitable. Maybe they just sent the worst of the worst to Mozambique. Or they learnt their lessons.

                :rat-salute:

As for the pagan/Norse stuff, I think it has something to do with that whole "reject modernity, embrace tradition" meme, where "modernity" basically goes all the way back to the Holy Roman Empire and the spread of Orthodox Christianity and/or Catholicism, depending on the region. So they start reaching for any sort of identity they can dredge up -- especially when we start talking about Vikings, thanks to the ahistorical "omg based white people" aesthetic and the abundance of written historical accounts.

It really sucks for the Neopagans when their iconography gets hijacked by fash and white supremacists, too.

Its weird how I've never heard of the Wagner Group before the Ukrainian invasion. Now its the default response to anyone who says "Ukraine's got a Nazi problem".

I meant the structure of the Russian state as a whole, not just this war. Navalny is just as vile, but he also just wouldn't have the capacity to actually construct a functioning state oligarchy that Putin had.

I hate how when the bourgeoise fucks around, it's everyone else who finds out. This is bleak.

Death to oligarchs at home and abroad, and death to america for orchestrating this.
