Was put in a literal concentration camp (I'm sorry, but "internment camp" is euphemistic language intended to obfuscate the reality) by his own government and years later he's caping for the exact same government. Also, he's gay! He was gay pre-Stonewall! He was put in a concentration camp by the government during WW2 and then had to hide his sexuality for a good part of his life because he might have then been jailed or worse if he'd come out.
