Absolutely, what made r/place was its spontaneity, the absolute chaos that still persists even when people finally organize. Yup. It was a fantastic little thing while it lasted, and was unlike anything done before. But you can't just do it again, that's not how these things work. It'll never be the same. The only way to do it again is to come up with a new cool thing for people to be surprised by.
It will be like Burning Man: the next times around will be more soulless and more walled off and pre-ordained by the ruling class.

The first place was actually on web 2.0 (which is what reddit is) and the third place was already on web 1.0. Time is a flat circle.
