Lol I saw a tweet the other day that the FCC received like 52 complaints about the will Smith slap and some blue check had a meltdown about how diseased society is. Like yeah society is hella fucked in so many ways but to draw a point from 50 fuckin calls is so ridiculous to me. There is a dozen other terrible takes about the slap but that one cracked me up

They have a meltdown anytime a rich person is inconvenienced. The slap hit them extra hard because it inconvenienced two rich people at the same time.

These people unironically think Coca-Cola (the company that paid death squads to murder union organizers and their families in South America) is socialist because they had a rainbow avatar on their twitter account during pride month.

Conservatives have been bitching about Disney being too "woke" for like 30 years. They always threaten to boycott over shit but never actually do. When Aladdin dropped, they genuinely went "how dare you do a Disney princess that isn't white" and rode that train for 2 decades, whining and still buying the merch.

In the late 90s evangelicals attempted to boycott Disney for granting some benefits to same-sex partners of employees.

We don't hate Aladdin for being brown. We hate him for being a Christ-hating Muslim.

      There's a difference.

What's more, "Aladdin" has been hailed as politically correct: Its heroes are not white

But for many Arab Americans and Muslims, the film is not innocent, funny or particularly triumphant. Many of its characters are portrayed as grotesque, with huge noses and sinister eyes. And they are violent, willing to chop off the hand of a woman who steals an apple for a hungry child.

      That's WaPo in 1993 interesting article https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/style/1993/01/10/angry-over-aladdin/46f2aacd-444b-4a81-9aa7-7c43cc84d65b/

It seems there was more of a stir about the racism and orientalism once the film came out. Usually how it goes, conservatives are mad about a thing, it comes out and conforms more or less to their views and they like it or simmer down, and radlibs come to complain for decent reasons and no one cares cause the money is made

Disney being woke is laughable. They're at least 20 years behind society with norms.

Also, the idea that wokeness is ruining media is hilarious. Bad writing and production is ruining media. The companies slapping woke themes on top of their unwatchable shows and movies are hoping that will carry their shit productions to the finish line.

As Matt Lech pointed out, Disney "wokeness" comes from the rank-and-file animators and writers, the executives are actively trying to crack down on it (and are likely funding the right-wing media campaign against it). Afaik much of their international market is pretty socially conservative, or at least the decision makers are, they probably try to suppress anything that would trigger social conservatives so that international edits are cheaper to produce.

Why wouldn't they just leave off the "10"? just make a stronger headline 'Families who are swearing..." and present the 10 as if they're part of a larger group. this is just bad propaganda

This might be a good opportunity for the left to sneak in and claim free speech for themselves again, or that we're the offensive contrarians.

"Is it such a crime for me to make people THINK! Why must I be hunted like a felon for CHALLENGING the norms? Ignorance is not a right! Freedom of speech applies to me too, and you don't have freedom FROM speech!"

Seriously though, the ability to create an outgroup/underclass is a big thing for maintaining capital. I forget the exact quote, but a guy said something along the lines of 'if a poor white man feels superior to a poor black man, they won't worry about other politics.'

Mickey Mouse needs to be in the public domain. He was invented almost 100 years ago and Walt Disney died over 50 years ago.

But it'll never happen, because Disney has the money to purchase legislators that will pass laws that favor its interests.

Meanwhile, the rest of us suffer. Yay Disney.

Bit Idea: Make a news website that does mass polling (or not, what are people gonna do, check?) and just reports as soon as it gets 10 random people who agree with the position. Increase the vitriol until it is so aggressively obvious that the purpose of the story is to influence rather than inform that people get angry and refuse to take the content seriously...

Their inability to see Disney for the cynical, calculating monster of capitalism that it is. And it's still too 'woke' for them. They just want segregated water fountains at Disneyland and they're too scared to say it.

One particular American brain worm I've been thinking about is how Americans think corporations exist to serve them.

Disney doesn't exist to make profit for shareholders, no, it exists to entertain and amuse me, the consumer. Disney is subservient to me as their costumer. I have power over them and they have to care about what i think.

Ofc this is just a worm baby from the major brain worm of Americans thinking of themselves primarily as consumers, not workers or anything else

        Yeah!

But i think the only reason corporations are able to maintain that facade is because they can hire min wage workers to suffer the abuse from the consumer
