Not trying to create a struggle sesh, just want to facilitate a discussion on the matter: Is sexual content of any kind okay, or not okay, here?

I'm using an alt to avoid potential retaliation, but have been a user for over a year, and it's just that the stance on sexual content/jokes seems to fluctuate alot. One week some sexual discussion/jokes are okay, the other there's seemingly zero tolerance.

I get not wanting full-on porn posts or unironic :awooga:-ing or stuff like that, but I feel like there's some nuance before it gets to those extreme points.

Sex is cool, good, funny and a huge part of life for most people imo, and I think as long as it's not porn or sexist ogling, there should be some wiggle room before something gets removed.

I think we're sex positive in that nobody would look down on you for being in a polycule or something like that - but the volcel thing exists for a very good reason, which is that being horny is heavily correlated with being creepy and this site wants to be a safe space from that. Discussions of sex work have also had a tendency to turn into struggle sessions because we have pretty diverse and strongly held beliefs on that topic.

I was going to write a comment, but you basically said what I'd say. We're a sex positive site, but this just isn't a place for horny posting (not to mention there are minors on this site as well)

there are minors on this site as well

I'm not sure we can police that. Additionally there's the fact that A LOT of non-sexual content on the site is also not really appropriate for anyone under 15 or so but there's not a lot we can really do about it without very significant downsides that would be harmful to the site overall.

This is not a comment advocating for more porn or horny posting, just a thought on their presence here being very hard to do anything about.

It's an issue with the internet and I guess maybe even transhumanism as a whole? Everybody of all ages becoming drastically more online over the past two years probably hasn't helped. It has got to be a very confusing time to be young.

Again, we should post some sort of legal notice saying that this site is for adults only

being horny is heavily correlated with being creepy

I don't think that's necessarily true, most people get horny and aren't creeps about it. It's stuff like op mentioned where it becomes a problem.

Being able to openly talk about sex with others on a platform that has no way to check whether or not you're a minor can lead to problems

Like yeah, talking to minors about sex isn't inherently bad or creepy, but uhhhh it's a slippery slope to say the least, and I can understand why the site chooses to be overly cautious

can't speak for the site as a whole but i don't want to see horny posting at all. i don't think its particularly pervasive here.

edit: i feel like making a more nuanced take: I don't like hearing sexual stuff from people, except my close friends sometimes because i'm comfortable with them. It's the sort of thing that in friendships you have to set boundaries about and it's not really realistic to respect every individuals boundaries on a large enough social media group. But i also don't feel like it's completely fair to ban it completely, because it seems to me that being open about sexual feelings has served as an important part of community building for LGBT people on the internet (in i think a less toxic way than it does for heterosexual people; i'm not sure if theres a significant LGBT equivalent to like misogynistic bro culture) and its somewhat a problem to suppress that form of self-expression that has only become (relatively) physically safe to do recently. anyways i'm glad i'm not a moderator here cause i don't want to make that call.

I think it's a reasonable discussion to have for sure.

Yep. It's the exact same type of dudes, only they're gay. I wouldn't say it's super significant, but it is a thing that you will see if you're hanging out in queer spaces enough.

Being so horny on main that you not only post about your hornyness but also use language that completely objectifies the target of your hornyness.

On top of my agreement with ssjmarx's comment, I'd also like to add that we've had users run with any sexual content and be inappropriate. Just recently it came out a user was harassing others in DMs, so if avoiding sexual content helps avoid that then I think it's a good thing

I just want to add that as an ace person I appreciate any space that makes attempts to be inclusive, there are so many sexual spaces on the internet that I have to curate masto follows and use lemmy/hexbear to feel included and respected.

There are legions of leftist horny-discords out there so I thanks to the :volcel-police: for what they do here, and for what it's worth I think the megathread is the best place to discuss any border-line hornyposting, relationship, kink-posts behind a CW and Spoiler.

Its fun to skirt the rules sometimes - the 'panting' emote exists after all - and sex is a big part of being gay so there necessarily has to be some space for it here. But the volcel joke exists for good reasons; for me, even though I am a disgusting pervert with a collection of thousands of odd sexual lovers, I enjoy it because every time I see someone say anything that might suggest they are a cis heterosexual I go bright pink and start puffing and groaning and clasping my temples. If I find out a poster I like is straight I mentally change their sex just so I can keep reading their posts.

This site's userbase, despite the impression created by the tireless and honorable spamming efforts of its prominent gender-terrorists, is still dominated significantly by men, by straight people, and by cis people. Joking aside, that's fine (and to be expected as a reddit clone full of redditors), some of them are I'm sure good people. But that means without intervention or exclusion the sexual attitudes common among that ilk would become the most prominent ones found on the website. And I doubt even the straight cis men here would want that; to be here now as anyone means, I think, that you are most comfortable feeling like you are in a place dominated by transmen (due to the shitposts), transwomen (due to the ranting effortposts), and bisexuals (due to the mascot). To exclude discussion of sex is to let that illusion live, hopefully to later become reality (through making people become gay and trans by reading posts)

When Hexbear sends its people, it's not sending its best. It's sending people that have lots of sex, and they're bringing that sex with them. They're cisgender. They're heterosexual. They're allosexual. And some, I assume, are good people.

    Sex is comedy is banned.

Sex is boring, indeed, foisted upon us at all angles and at all times. Rebecca Loos ‘pleasuring’ a pig on Channel 5; atrociously unfunny sitcoms like Carrie and Barry and that unfeasibly shit Friday night C4 series whose name escapes me, whose reliance upon explicit sexual reference show that sex in such comedies is now as drearily inevitable as the litany of cosy social embarrasments in such staid seventies shows as Terry and June used to be. Where once the comedy, such as it was, turned upon burning the roast beef when the boss was due for a dinner party, now it depends upon gratuitous smut which is offered up with that sremoveding adolescent duplicity typical of sexualists: i.e. sex is both ordinary, everyday, nothing special yet at the same time charged with a frission of naughty transgression.

I get why such words get caught by the censor, but it does have the ironic effect of me running through various slurs in my head based on context clues to complete the word like it's some game of bigoted hangman.
