Authorities said he has apprehended a block away from the residence by members of the U.S. Marshals Service and the Montgomery County Police Department after he made a 911 call in which he said had homicidal thoughts, and he traveled to attack Kavanaugh, officials said.

Seriously, I have to wonder how many FBI agents were talking to this guy on Instagram in the 24 hours prior to this event.

Hell, I'd almost chalk this up to some MKULTRA shit, with the :cia: doing a shot across the bow to keep old Brett in line. "Oh, hi Brett. I know you've got some big cases on your docket this year. Please keep in mind that some people could snap at any moment and you're never truly safe without our protection."

Difference is that MKULTRA assassins actually completed their missions (the ones that weren't totally destroyed mentally / turned into serial killers in the process) and anyone who makes it to the Supreme Court doesn't need the reminder.

I mean, in this theory the guy was just a "warning". So he did complete his mission.

anyone who makes it to the Supreme Court doesn’t need the reminder

I'd guess the folks at the highest levels of authority are the ones who need the most reminders.

What are the odds the FBI bought him the weapons and paid for his cab there?

It depends heavily on the agency, the age of the agent, and the family/region of origin for the individual.

But party affiliation doesn't really matter when one's loyalty is to one's agency first and to any partisan politics only distantly and abstractly. The FBI and DEA have fights over jurisdiction all the time, regardless of the party affiliation of its members. Military officers will align with this or that party based on electoral benefit, while championing their branch above the others once in office regardless of partisan inclination.

Is the FBI still mostly Mormons or has its enormous growth made that less feasible now.

I couldn't tell you definitively, but from what little I've heard the younger people tend to be less likely to be Mormon.

What exactly was the point of calling the police on himself and taking an unloaded gun? Was it this guy's first time doing crime?

News headlines will read "Attempted assassination attempt on Justice Kavanaugh thwarted by brave law enforcement" and no one will bother reading more about it.

He was clearly going through an episode of something. The gun was also in a safe in his car and he confessed immediately, after having warned them in a call beforehand

The thrill of the chase! Taunting the police because he knows that he is too smart to ever be caught by them! Sportsmanship!

He was leveling the playing field, knowing that even with an unloaded gun and having given away his identity and location, the police would soon find out who was the hunter and who was being hunted. Something like that, I assume.

I don't know who here is unstable enough to need to hear this:

Biden will just appoint a younger, more right wing replacement unless the guy chokes on his corn flakes.

A worse Supreme Court justice getting appointed would be business as usual, while a bit of stochastic violence would at least be funny.

That said, there's more effective and important shit for those who want to do something than getting thrown in prison.

yeah but if i go get thrown in prison i don't have to talk to thousands of shitty people in my town to find a half dozen comrades.

I wonder how Biden would fuck that up. There would definitely be instant fortifications around the remaining justices. No opportunity for the adventurism to spread. Biden would get to appoint the replacement with a frothing right wing calling for retaliatory violence and I feel like that would compel him to find another republican. I just can't see the democrats saying "sad, anyway let's appoint a 30 year-old liberal before 2024." They would make the worst decision in the interest of civility.
