Whether it’s for work or when your going out or whatever? It seems most people don’t now, but I’ve seen some places still have them. Kinda weird cuz it’s not like COVID’s gone. I still wear a mask but I’m the only person that does at my workplace and it’s kinda awkward tbh.

Know what's wild? Y'all should see the masking etiquette in the developing world.

Literally everyone masks up and stays masked consistently... even the laborers in the rice fields making less than $5/day. Government provides basic foodstuffs for folks who need to quarantine, and masks provided by government (and "courtesy" at all stores.)

Vaccination proof cards required and checked to enter/eat at restaurants. Temperature checks required to enter all stores. Hand sanitizer pumps at all entrances.

So, yeah, even though it's crowded as heck and healthcare resources sub-standard... there's barely any cases. It's pretty incredible what can be done when there's not some wacko fringe lunatics running around making life miserable for everyone.

    Yes.

Two months ago I made this post:

Only like 10% of my coworkers still wear masks. I’m not looking forward to saying “I told you so” in a few weeks.

Guess what happened two weeks after this post? COVID outbreak in the department, a dozen colleagues and their entire families infected.

My warehouse is stuck in this cycle where a bunch of people get Covid so the health department makes us wear masks until cases go down at which point everyone is allowed to take off their masks at which point a bunch of people catch Covid so the health department makes us wear masks until cases go down...we're on our 3rd round

I don't think mandatory masking at work should have ever gone away I hate this

We're heading towards this exact path. We're now working from home, soon they'll have us back at the office but most likely won't order us to wear masks.

Even a child could see why this is stupid, but oh well :shrug-outta-hecks:

I masked rigorously as did most of my collegues working to accomodate the increase in people ordering shit online in 2020, an extrordinarily shitty time to do that job. Wasn't doing anything besides work, wasn't seeing anybody. Caught it relatively quick, at work. Caught it again later, also at work.

I think masks are effective, but they aren't so effective as you make it seem. Probably you just have a job that lets you stay home and that is why you didn't catch it. And I don't agree with blaming the sick when they get sick during a plague, I am sure your dad and all his friends are huge assholes, but its a plague. People get sick!

Were either of these two statements correct?

        • People took off their masks in the break room to eat lunch, or similar.

        • Most people were wearing cloth masks or loose surgical masks.

Those would explain why they had limited effectiveness. For a mask to work reliably it has to fit and filter properly - this is how many doctors can work in plague conditions and not get sick (unless they're unlucky when changing masks/eating lunch/they get germs on their hands and touch their eyes/etc.). Unfortunately, the people in charge did a very bad job of explaining this and making good masks available.

I was not using the breakroom at the time. The second statement definitely though. Eventually we were given kn95s but not for a while.

Yes. Of course. And I shave more often to make sure my N95 gets a good seal. That’s really been the only inconvenience.

But it’s worth it to get that “only badass with a red hat” feeing that all the chuds have been high on for a while.

If I am inside and around other people (e.g. grocery store) then damn right I'm still wearing a mask. Ngl, I'm unpleasantly surprised how many here have said they don't wear masks now, when not long ago it seemed like the consensus was (imo rightly) that it was uncaring and irresponsible at best. I get it, what good can it do when no one else around is doing it? But I still want to do everything I can to minimize the chances of further fucking up my health, potentially long term, as well as risk even a slight chance of being a vector for doing that to someone else who doesn't deserve it.

Yeah, like I said, I get why people cave and just do what everyone else around them is doing. But I could have sworn it was only like a month ago that this same question was asked (I mean the question op is asking) and it was near unanimous here that the answer was somewhere along the lines of "fuck yes we're still wearing masks and if you're not you're an asshole and a bad communist for putting others at risk and also foolish for putting yourself needlessly at risk." Lots of comments about telling off libs or chuds who sneer at mask use, lots of discussion about how each reinvention increases odds of long covid and more severe health problems, etc.

What I was wondering about was why there seemed to be such a shift away from that in such a short time specifically here. I mean, it could be a number of reasons, I'm sure, but I find it odd and disconcerting.

i literally live in florida, i am routinely the only person in public spaces wearing a mask

and i feel like it's worth mentioning that i am not even remotely tough to defend myself if someone decided to make an issue of it, but i do it anyway because spreading a deadly virus is a shitty, anti-human thing to do

"i don't wanna wear a mask forever :cri:"

contributes to people who are immunocompromised/don't want lifelong health issues having to wear a mask forever

seriously disheartening from people who are supposed to care about others as a matter of course

Probably an unpopular stance here but I haven't worn a mask in months now. I don't really interact with anyone outside of my age range or with immune deficiencies tho. Triple vaxxed and have antibodies, at this point I'm just like, if I can't take it off now I never can, and I don't want to wear one for the rest of my life.

Would test before seeing my grandparents or something like that, obviously would respect the rules of a hospital/health clinic/whatever

you shouldn't be interacting with anyone who's forced to interact with you if you won't wear a mask.

If you mean service / transit / groceries / etc., we're maybe at like 25% mask usage where I'm at, and most employees seem to have completely given up over a year ago.

Yeah. Mask + shades + cap combo is unbeatable for bums like me that want to hide my beard that I didn't line up correctly, or that I desperately need a haircut, or my dead eyes from not getting enough sleep. Or all three at once

But also I literally can’t even remember the last time I saw an employee anywhere wearing a mask. When I go to the store maybe 5% of people inside are wearing masks, and 0% of the staff

I still mask up. Not 100% of the time but close.

Honestly i just don't mind it. Even if it's just decreasing my risk of COVID by a slight margin it's worth it.

Not a lot of people in my area still wear mask but at least some do and it's consistently enough that I'm never alone so i don't feel too awkward.

So in California if your place of work gets like a lot of cases at once the health department can mandate masks for an individual workplace. Which means my Amazon warehouse has this super fun cycle where we are allowed to have masks off, then a handful of people get Covid and masks are mandatory for a couple weeks, cases go down, everyone is allowed to take their masks off again...so a bunch more people catch Covid so we have to put the masks on again and and and :pain:
