Yes. They just say the most insane things at the drop of a hat. The aging majority has not helped with this.

I come from a strong Catholic family of the liberal side. They mostly side with Francis. However my sibling's partner's family are all conservative Catholic and a boatload of them voted for Trump. If I were to distill it down to a quip I would say my own extended family are "Catholic Americans" and my sibling's inlaws are "American Catholics"

I remember meeting some and being blown away by how crazily conservative they were. I'm used to hearing that kind of crazy stuff from protestants.
