Through friends, I know a guy who makes 400k USD per year.

This same guy has no food in his apartment because "it's too expensive". He eats out (or orders in) for literally every meal.

In sum: the rich are idiots.

I know a total :my-hero: worshipper offline that has a high paying techbro job but is such a slob that he, I kid you not, does not wear the same clothes twice, ever. He throws them away and keeps buying new ones every time he goes to work!

The reason? "The feeemale :quark: does the laundry." He has no feeemale because he has visibly dirty fingernails and smells like belly button lint, but his clothes are new on every date (he dates a lot), which he thinks totally hides what a hygiene disaster he is!

          Don't I know it.

I don't want to doxx myself so I'll just state that my interactions with him are limited these days. Fortunately.

He's a true believer in the "asteroid mining will solve all of Earth's problems" bazinga rapture, so he doesn't just not care about pollution and waste, he seriously believes that environmental crises will just spur on more innovation and make the treats flow faster.

He isn't that fat, but he's certainly not in shape. He wouldn't actually be that repulsive if he cleaned his fingernails (and seeing his laundry piles in the past, other parts of himself too :kombucha-disgust: ) and got rid of the smell.

I don't know the garbage days in his neighborhood, but I do know that he has a literal maid service, because techbro.

I've met people like this, my college had a lot of comp sci guys, and I always want to take a shower whenever I think about them.

They're the petite bourgeoisie of our time, the enforcers of the will of the ruling class, and their gross beliefs match their personal habits (or lack thereof). The fact that we're basically herded around and surveilled by these people says a lot about how fucked we are right now. :society:

A reassuring point is most of them are exceedingly stupid and do not understand social organization (or even basic human empathy).

Contemporary culture and their own education and training told them that they are very smart, and more than that, are logical and rational and can't be fooled. Thus they are easily fooled.

But also almost impossible to talk to because they're basically the arch-debatebros who think every human discussion should be replaced with computer logic and that all of their arguments are "rational" while yours are "emotional"

Very hard to talk them out of being smug :reddit-logo: debatebros, but pretty easy to grift them.

Just getting a basic conditioner shampoo hybrid with a reasonable scent (sandalwood or eucalyptus are pretty good) and then combine with bodywash and deodorant. Bam, five minute shower and a quick rub in the pits. Put some cologne or aftershave on (I love pinaud and other CVs cheap brands). Men's hygiene is so fucking basic and yet so many fuck it up horribly.

Generic office drone chic in inoffensive colors.

Yes, he buys in bulk, sent to his door. He wears office slacks to look vaguely professional.

He has a maid service but somehow refuses to wear the same things twice or pay for laundry detail. The maid just throws his clothes out that he drops on the floor.

He's a well-paid mess. And he codes things that you probably interact with. :agony-minion:

all our computer shit would be way better if devs were forced to be as diligent as the 80s instead of memory and processing gains being wasted on bloat

tasks expand to fill the memory available they were dilligent back then because they had to be

it doesn't have to, there's just no financial incentive or regulatory pressure. embedded systems are still constrained because they want to pay less for hardware, but you care a lot less if you're not the one buying ram.

yeah but there is financial pressure to get the product released quickly which means there is pressure to cut corners and the memory being available makes it a corner that can be cut. Software developers now aren't morally inferior than they were then bosses then just listened when developers pointed out issues of bloat
