its rly not if you actually paid attention to the two. Zizek always had reactionary parts of him you were just a "snowflake" or whatever if you brought it up before 2020 because it was all social politics and you just "didn't understand" his esoteric say-nothing writing style

Yeah. He was defended quite fiercely in here when he made his reactionary comments.

That’s because the soviets were dumb enough to let in real information through their censorship. Americans are smart enough to block fake news :maybe-later-kiddo:

the curse of Chomsky - only when he was reduced to a desiccated husk could he realize he was wrong about the Soviet Union and AES :chomsky-yes-honey:

And it still sounds like he's framing it as though the USSR were a totalitarian dystopia, but maybe that's just my brain making that connection because, you know, Chomsky talking about AES countries.

I think he's doing something similar to our "In Communist Russia..." bit.

Eh honestly I don't hate Chomsky that much. Yeah he has shit takes often but he did cowrite Manufacuring Consent and he does consistently rail against US imperialism, even if sometimes in a misguided way.

Baby and bathwater and all that.

I'm not being entirely serious, you gotta take the good takes where you can get them. Atleast Chomsky has a semi-constant presence in main stream media. He's someone you're supposed to start flanking from the left eventually.

USSR let in voice of america? isn't that literally an arm of the CIA and the same people who do radio free europe/asia? also tucker carlson's dad used to run voice of america

I believe they'd frequently show American propaganda immediately followed by reports basically refuting what the propaganda was saying. Doesn't seem like a bad idea, Reactionary Propaganda is gonna weed its way into your country (the forces of reaction control all of the most profitable media apparatuses in the world) and cults will form around it whether you decide to tackle the misinformation head on. Look at Falun Gong, NK defectors who want to go back and no long can, etc. None of these are organic home grown movements.

It's broadcast TV. You can't not let it in. Anyone with a radio or a TV set can tune in and there's nothing you can really do about it.

My first reaction was a sober, "yeah... it's been like that for a long time..." and then I remember who Noam Chomsky is and it's like... "What the fuck, dude, you helped write the fucking book on how Freeze Peach doesn't exist in bourgeoisie democracy, what, 3 fucking decade ago?!" Or maybe I'm giving too much credit to MC.

No, I think he's always been spot on when discussing foreign policy, culture, and propaganda in regards to Americans. He starts to get goofy when topics around economics or philosophy come up.

"Today Americans are not permitted to hear what Russians are saying"

I'd like more info on this. I'm inclined to not believe it since I can still go to rt.com without a vpn

Really? The Soviet people could listen to BBC and VOA? I thought they jammed those transmissions?

There were attempts, but radio jamming isn't very exact, and that got even more difficult once satellite signals became more common. Sometimes the USSR would just give up or decide it was a waste of money, like there wasn't any jamming between 1973 and 1980.
