The brony trend literally started on 4chan who all thought it would be funny to "ironically" watch this new My Little Pony show and then suddenly found out they liked it. 4chan banned all My Little Pony content when it totally took over the site and it forced it to develop a community elsewhere. This created the wider brony community.
Given the origin it really shouldn't be a surprise why this occurred.

Honestly I've only ever been in the periphery of the Touhou fandom because Touhou is kind of a tough thing to really get into. I guess it doesn't surprise me that the fandom is Like That because the otaku community in general is Like That, but I just never got that impression from Touhou specifically enough to really single it out like that.
