A lot of money against her after she spoke out against the cops and didn't fully bow to AIPAC. The party thinks she's a liability, to their careers if nothing else.

      idk lol

ya i think there were 3 in her district and they all won so definitely pushed her over the edge. idk why she doesnt just join dsa already she can clearly use the help

I think joining DSA would platform get critics from the left, and that's something she doesn't really want.

Like with Jamaal Bowman, she'd be in it for a cycle only to get kicked out again when she fails to vote the party line.

i feel like she already gets attacked for literally everything she might as well get close to DSA and get their backing cause shes gonna seriously need it next time now that they see she can be beat theyre gonna flood the next election with tons of cash against her

Right now, DSA nominally endorses her as the Least Bad Option. I can't imagine anyone who would turn out for her tomorrow with a DSA membership that doesn't endorse her today.

But I can imagine a number of people who might feel alienated if she takes an active role in DSA while still flirting with mainstream Dem leadership in DC.

no DSA doesnt endorse her, she only tried in 2018 to get endorsed but then didnt pan out (think cause didnt wanna run as an open socialist). if she did want to join and they did endorse it would give her the needed local infrastructure and volunteers that she needs to running a stronger campaign next time, thats whats actually important cause DSA can mobilize people for these races.

She's already an incumbent weathering strong challengers. I suspect she does have a strong campaign.

When are libs ready to admit that the more progressive candidates are more electable? I'm not talking about media ghouls, I don't think for a second they believe the bullshit they're saying, I'm talking about regular libs who do believe that.

electability shouldn't even be a concern. she the incumbent in a solid blue district, she's gonna crush in the general election.

The electability argument all comes down to libs always thinking about what republicans want rather than what they want.

        "We should elect this candidate"

"hmmm no the conservatives won't vote for them, lets go for someone they'd like."

        scandal prone

She's a Somali Muslim woman in Congress in America. Republicans still believe with their whole hearts that she secretly married her brother.

I was talking more about her apparently having an affair with her campaign manager, which I don't really care about. I will say the nice thing about the Republicans being crazy about her is that basically anything they say is probably bullshit.

Still one of the few politicians I donate to. Nobody has a perfect track record, everybody has blindspots....but I'll stand in solidarity with one of the few voices in congress willing to take any kind of stance against AIPAC and take the right crticism of US foreign policy. The fact that the Democratic party was willing to primary her is enough reason to support her IMO.

All of our ghouls are awful, but she is one of the least awful. She'll fall in line and vote for more imperial bloodshed like the rest of them, but sometimes she speaks out against it as well so she clears that extremely low bar?

Results like this are a limiting factor on how cool and good a politician can be. If you're too cool, you'll draw so much heat and opposition money that you'll be out of a job.

The strategy for people in these types of positions is to be as cool as you can be while staying in power, use that power to lower barriers for cooler people who are not in power, and be ready to go full cool if the winds shift.

Yeah, our system forces everyone involved to be complicit in its worst excesses. I know I should have a certain level of leeway or forgiveness for that, but it's hard.

Yeah, it's tough to ride the line between calling on folks to do more and maintaining an understanding of what is feasible at the moment. Then you also have to factor in how less radical actions can enable more radical actions without letting that become an excuse.

It was a bit closer than one would like, but Ilhan essentially weathered the perfect storm.

      • Samuels came into the race with a ton of name recognition and political capital.
      • The AIPAC may not have been involved, but there was still a lot of money coming to Samuels from wealthy and/or conservative donors.
      • The StarTribune is the biggest media influence in town, and has been fighting Ilhan for 4 years, and gave Samuels a lot of good press.
      • The riots and police issues have been marinating for two years, giving libs and conservatives a lot of ammunition against any "Defund" candidate.
      • Moderates have a lot of momentum after Frey won and the public safety amendment failed just last year.
