Nothing says punk like politely asking for a user feedback survey and using the phrase "changes in our core services."

These were the guys who broke from reddit for betraying its principles or something once they started charging for API access. It’s the Freedom Caucus of redditors.

Everyone is telling them how silly is to make a site from zero just because you dont like the opinions of the devs and how java sucks compared to rust.

Its going to be funny the seeing the drama when sublinks drops and they realised no one wants to jump ship to it

Can't wait to watch the most irritating turboliberals on the fediverse retreat from Lemmy and make their own little platform, before tearing each other apart.

The funniest thing the devs can do is simply not make a mechanic to port over an instance to another platform so they have to rebuild from scratch.

Recent and future history of .world...

Mid 2023: We love reddit, but it was a mistake to use a centralized platform. Lemmy is FOSS and decentralized, so it will be more resistant to the problems we had on Reddit.

Mid-Late 2023: We can't stand all the tankies, let's defederate so we can't see them! Nevermind that this will make us more centralized, it's more important to quash voices of dissent.

2024: We can't stand that tankies made our platform and won't let us turn it into Reddit. We're going to make our very own Reddit!

2025: Running a site is expensive. We need to find some revenue sources and will be testing the use of ads to fund our site. You can always opt out of ads by signing up for a subscription.

        2026: Finance capital, hell yeah!

Later: Our platform fell apart again just like Reddit, how could we have seen this coming??

Ok I have no real opinion on Rust, but I hate Java. Who willingly chooses it at this point? What does it do that C# (or literally anything else, I assume Rust is ok, I'm just a boomer) doesn't? Its so bad, one of my professors did a "I made this program in each language" test and had to make a graph without Java because literally every other language looked the same otherwise.

No this isn't me being salty 5 years after Java refused to handle a basic object for a college project and brought my grade for a class down a whole letter. Haha

It's used everywhere in business so you're basically guaranteed to find a job if you're good with it, and vice versa, the hiring pool is big if you're a corporation. It's got a robust standard library. In the last few years it's picked up more and more useful features like lambdas and dynamic typing to cut down on boilerplate. It'll run on basically anything and you, the developer, don't need to worry about compiling to specific target platforms. It's also avoided a lot of the design-by-committee garbage that's turned C++ into a Venn diagram of feature incompatibility.

That said, package management in java kind of sucks. There's still plenty of boilerplate. The language is highly dependent on meta-programming annotations in many cases that hide code from you and obscure details. Exceptions are stupid and expensive.

Nothing says punk rock like a whole ass site that spends every moment of existence trying to dunk on leftists.

Edit: So is Sublinks just a fork project of Lemmy? The dev has all the Lemmy stuff forked in his personal github and lol. I ask again, if you wanna make an echo chamber on Lemmy, why not just defed from everyone, yes it's dumb but it saves you the headache of spending 5 days trying to fix shit from a poorly executed migration.

Probably to prevent cherry picking since what they actually want to do is isolate their audience for profit, and so a rewrite in a new language means their implementation of the api will inevitably drift and become incompatible.

Then, as the biggest instance they will seek to push other sites to conform to their API and standards instead of lemmy, meaning they will take control of the lemmy pocket of the fediverse.

Anyone who stays on .world is a shitlib who wants a new facebook.

Worse (or at least more pathetic), according to the comments from a mod in the thread it's because they don't know rust and don't want to learn it.

Edit: looked again and realised it wasn't the mod saying it, it was one of the sublinks Devs themselves.

Because apparently libs are too stupid to use anything other than enterprise corporate slime. This and the use of microsoft forms really gives off "elon musk insisting they use windows for the paypal servers" energy.

The site owners are terrified by the concept of the tankie Lemmy devs being able to just do... Unspecified tankie things to the site code. They can't come up with a good reason or an actual example, so it's just the same thing as red scare panic about Chinese aluminium today or Soviet iron in the past.

Totally baseless fear that somehow using software made by communists will give us some sort of nebulous control over them to do something nefarious.

Please, if you dont want to participate in the forms, be so kind and DONT participate in it. And dont bash others for beeing not an linux elitist that only touches FOSS stuff. The last point is a “pun” a “joke” or in german a “witz”. If you dont understand it and only search tinfoil conspiracy theories than please not here. If you are really that deep invested into alliens that want to learn about your species by spying onto you through non FOSS software, then please dont use the internet, go out, have friends and put your tinfoil where it belongs, as a wrapper for some cooking.

Wow, admin's reply to someone explaining why using Microsoft Forms for survey might not be the greatest idea.

lemmy world admins are so mad that the lemmy creators are ebil tankyies's' that they are making their own lemmy in java because they are too lazy to learn rust. the cringe CW was for the "we still punk" comment at the end

I'm gonna be a dick real quick and say Rust is not that hard. If you can comprehend legacy java, you should be able to learn rust in a couple weeks to be productive, and in a weekend to make a hotfix. Lazy is the perfect word for it, they're so mad at le ebil tankies they're going to outright refuse to learn a new language just to be spiteful.

No you don't understand, because they don't know rust there's no way they could do better in rust than they can in Java. Which ignores every part of how shit Java is. I love watching any Java app I support take 5m to start no matter the configuration or resources allocated

They're so afraid of lifetimes and borrow checkers that they'll completely reinvent the wheel to ensure they have almost no adoption in the long term.
