My read, which could easily be wrong, is that after Russiagate, liberals turned on him, and only right-wing media outlets would give him a platform (and therefore a job). Since then, he's been basically love-bombed by the trumpist right for years.
Yeah. He was always a libertarian, albiet a somewhat left one, with no real theory which is always asking for trouble. I've met a few people over the years that met him even before the Snowdon stuff and they pretty much all said or implied that he was a great journalist but also a total narcissist. So that does seem to track.

I'm not sure where Glenn is getting that from, I'd assume someone at The Economist just had a vested interest in something that Bolsonaro has fucked up that Lula won't, regardless of their politics. I also haven't been paying attention to Bolsonaro's treatment in the Western Anglo press. Obviously Fox loves him, but beyond that I haven't seen any pro-Lula pieces.
