We live in a neighborhood with dozens of families with kids. We saw maybe five trick or treaters.

My wife buys candy every year for us to give out. We would literally get 1-2 kids at our old apartment. Now we have a house and she was excited to give out candy this year. We had 0 people come by despite having lights and decorations.
Yeah, we don't have side walks and we're on a street that has crazy assholes drive 40 down it because for some reason the speed limit on our street is 30 despite having houses on both sides and speed bumps. We have a few kids on the street so I figured we'd at least get them before they move on to bigger neighborhoods.
Also lol at sidewalks. We had a mayoral candidate who wanted to make the city more walking friendly, add more side walks and crossings and they unironically called her a commie and I quote "Streets are for cars dumbass". I'm not gonna say that the South is irredeemable but they're certainly close.
From what I understand, parents take their kids to a church parking lot and go car to car getting candy.
It's the laziest lamest shit I've ever heard of. Just buy your kid a bag of candy if you're that much of a loser, jesus christ.
Depends where you live. Kiddo and I went trick or treating last night with a huge group from his school and it was bloody awesome and jam packed in the neighborhood even on a Monday night.
...only downside was one couple we trick or treated left saying "yeah, we're holding the bags so we can dump it all out in the trash when we get home and swap it out. Better safe than sorry with the whole fentanyl thing...."

We had about 70 trick or treater's last night. We have a lot of positive factors working for us:
- It's a 1940's neighborhood, so houses are a lot closer together than modern suburbs
- We actually have sidewalks
- There are a lot of immigrant families living here, so kids actually exist
Most American suburbs have a totally hostile geography to trick or treating. Apartment complexes could in principle have enough density and kids to support it, but in practice everything is behind locked lobby doors.

I'm kinda sad that halloween is very slowly but surely becoming an adult holiday. Every year it's a little more 18+

Yes they do. Used to live in an exurbia neighborhood and there were tons when I was a kid. Then for a few years it got quieter in my parents' part of the neighborhood. Then new people moved in and more people had babies and now people are back again. Later I moved to the city and no kids were trick or treating... Because it was a college town. Moved again to a place where families live and lo and behold there are trick or treaters again but it's a bit different cause it's medium density so kids trick or treat at stores too... Pretty interesting. I think there are more people leaving bowls of candy out though. Kinda lame.
