Its possible that they did fire them, like I could possibly see them going out of control or something, but I cant imagine that Russia would do it intentionally. Like starting a war with even just Poland right now would be really tripping over their own dick.

Russia has a clear advantage in escalating. Ukraine is peripheral for Americans while quite existential for Russia. Russia only has parity with nato at the tippy top not within the margins. Kherson just happened and Russia needs to maintain it's credibility as a nation whose territory (of which kerson is a part) is sovereign before anything else.
