Many older 45+ people have a view of the internet as this not-real thing where their actions have no consequences. Also that it's so large and unwieldy that nobody will ever stumble across your skeletons because finding them is too difficult etc etc.

Our older internet terminology reinforced this "IRL" implies that the opposite (online) is not-real. I've always pushed back against IRL as a term because it's really not healthy to view the internet as pretend or that actions and relationships and activities here have no consequences.
back in the day your government name wasn't associated with your online handle like that. it was very much not real a lot of the time because you could just walk away or make a new account. nobody knows you're a dog on the internet, after all.
racism, sexism, etc would still be felt as real by the people subjected to it even if you were passively not indicating your gender or minority status of course, but again it used to be possible to just leave or you could even get away with flaming right back in ways that are much less possible today, especially if your job is publicly online.

Basically the reason people that are obsessed with hating a group like gay people is because they are constantly thinking about gay sex. The radio show host, Steve Austin (thankfully not stone cold) had been simmering away with some thinly-veiled GC shit on ABC Brisbane and decided to confirm himself as a terf gronk by inviting our good friend Sall Grover, creator of Giggle onto his show.
At this point, when twitter users jumped on to roast him, many of them had the good idea to quickly check his likes and find 5 years worth of likes on trans porn posts.
Apparently when this was discovered and people were shredding him for being a chaser, he was on air and cut to a break/different secment and during this time the likes started to disappear - he was manually unliking trans porn posts while at work, on air.
He then made some post about his account being compromised which no one believed because no one is going to log into some minor-tier radio host's twitter to like porn and do nothing else for five fucking years. Couple of hours later, he deleted the account.I believe he is now under investigation by the ABC for consuming pornography during work, in a taxpayer funded workplace (the ABC is australia's public broadcaster)
