I think that what pisses me off most about this article. He's framing fear of killbots as some reactionary Luddism, but there's no new technology here. Just the same shitty combat robots the army's used for two decades but now for the police too.

Luddite reactionary: sir I want to see thick-blooded American policeman administer justice with their own hands/weapons, not these robo-dorks

Even if it was truly new technology, there's a level of gaslighting built into the idea of "if it's new, it doesn't matter if it might hurt you or people you care about, it's new so don't be a Luddite. Bazinga!"

When the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted last week to allow police to use robots to kill people in extreme circumstances, the critics predictably cited sci-fi movies.

I had a super-quickie look at his Wikipedia page.

    Rich Lowry

Richard Lowry (born 1968) is an American writer who is the former editor and now editor-in-chief of National Review.

    [...]

Lowry is also a syndicated columnist, author, and political analyst who is a frequent guest on NBC News and Meet the Press. He has written four books. [...] Lowry's first novel, the political thriller Banquo's Ghosts, was co-written with Keith Korman and published in 2009. The plot revolves around a nuclear-armed Iran and an inebriated leftist journalist.

    [...]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lowry praised Florida governor Ron DeSantis for his hands-off approach to COVID-19 in a May 2020 column titled "Where does Ron DeSantis go to get his apology?".

      :whywhywhywhywhy:

      That was my idea.

If he wrote [@Bluegrass_Buddhist as the drunkard journalist who heroically helps Iran succeed in the death of america like I did, I am suing.

I love how they always make sure to get a photo of women, preferably with brightly colored hair, in their anti-protestor pieces. Gotta get that chud blood boiling for the clicks. Not manipulative at all.

The police already avail themselves of all sort of mechanical implements that assist their efforts to track down suspects and, if necessary, kill them, from radios to cars to battering rams to helicopters to, of course, firearms. If we trust a police officer with, say, a Glock 19 — a lethal weapon — there’s no good reason to deny him or her a killer robot during a mass shooting or hostage-taking.

    Who trusts :the-pigs: with guns?

Nobody but this reads as a reaction to the school shooting where all the cops were too scared to do anything. That they NEED the killer robots so they can do their job because they're chicken shits.

So they'd detonate a bomb bot in a classroom to kill one shooter and how many kids are in there? Fuck I'm already calling that something like that will happen by next year.

Also stay tuned for an interview of the developer of a new state of the art 'Bunker Sphere' to protect the one's you love.

Audio of the footage has been removed, the police chief has yet to issue an explanation, citing confidentiality of operating procedures. Later tonight, should you have cameras to watch your neighbors? The answer may surprise you.

Gonna sell front door nets as an anti-killbot product.

Something like this. Fuck you cops, walk or fly your robots through that.

Will pose absolutely no problem for the homeowner to pass through the door while creating peace of mind from killbot attacks. A bit of netting on the front door won't take up any space either as it'll sit flat, easy.

Trying to ward off potentially transformative changes in technology is a huge mistake.

This could have been written by one of the True Materialists(tm) on Hexbear if only it lead with "if you're against the unfettered use of any new technology you're against Materialism(tm) and are being too emotional." :very-intelligent:
