US Senator gives Bytedance their First Amendment case on a silver platter.

It'll be funny to see the courts try to ignore the brazen admissions like this.

idk all signs point to Bytedance not budging on this so it will be really funny if this backfires and tiktok becomes unavailable in the US.

Might see youtube shorts take off or something totally unforeseen pretty wild shit all around.

from what I’ve heard side-loading will only be enabled in the EU.

the fanboys have told me this is a good thing, uwu smol bean apple is just protecting kids from downloading Clash_of_Clans_Hack_2024_Working.ipa monke-beepboop

wonder if a tiktok ban changes their mind

That’s what happened in India after TikTok got banned there. YouTube shorts took off and so did another platform called Josh.

My only concern with YouTube shorts taking off is that their algorithm is a far-right cesspool.

Honestly it would be 12x funnier if Bytedance got the WTO to declare this in violation of the charter and threatened to enforce the relevant punishments on the US if it doesn’t acquiesce.

WTO has no enforcement mechanism because the US has refused to appoint more judges or some shit

Probably not. But if it came to that at least it would further undermine the illusion of “the international rules-based order”

Yes. The US wants to take down any social media it can't control. The narrative was supposed to stay pro-Israel, and it didn't, and now Uncle Sam is PISSED.

A good rule of thumb is also to take note of what Americas puppet countries are doing.

Australia is going after Twitter at the moment, for example.

Same energy as John Bolton going on live television and telling everyone the reason why the US is sanctioning Venezuela is that "it's about the oil"

At work atm, so I don't have time to go find a video of it. But I distinctly remember it happened.

How can we possibly manufacture consent unless we seize the means of information distribution. Also, TikTok hurts meta and Xitter financially so really it should be nationalized (sold to another US backed corporation). Let the free market decide etcetera

Yeah...TBH this seems more like either:

      A) The thing that caused them to expedite something they already wanted to do.

      B) This is less the quiet part out loud and more the thing they are allowed to say out loud in public. Like its more palatable and acceptable to call this the "end hamas grooming act" as opposed to the "Facebook and Meta relief act".

I think both are probably actual motivations that overlap.
