I feel like the first movie was such a lightning in a bottle film of its time - arriving right at the cusp of the arrival of CGI that could actually look good, riding the wave of the weird 3D movie phase of those years.
Making a bunch of sequels over ten years later seems so strange. Feels difficult for that lightning to strike twice.
Hasn't the second one made over a billion dollars now? Sure it won't end up as highest grossing movie of all-time but it's still going to make a shit ton of money.

Doesn't it have to be among the highest grossing films ever to be profitable? I heard something like that.

No they're right, James Cameron said in an interview it needs to make 2 billion to even break even. It will do that at this rate though, tonight's gross it'll be at 1.5 billy
