:lathe-of-heaven:
And then the house goes straight to impeaching Biden which Dems in the senate then buckle to and vote to impeach in the name of bipartisanship
Absolutely not. At best, that'll crack the Dems like an egg and set up another dud GOP President going into 2028. At worst, you get a full Two-Terms of George Bush III.
I think you underestimate how many Olds are hopelessly addicted to MSNBC and consequently ride-or-die for Biden. Senate Dems turning on him would destroy their faith in the party for at least an election cycle.
How many people became unreachably alienated after the rail thing? Are all those old people still around from 2020 and his microscopic margin then?
I for one could really use that 600 dollars he owes me, but that's ancient history I guess.
Dude had enormous margins in the general. Pretty much a reversal from 2016, particularly in the Midwest.
The reporting was slow to come in, particularly across the Southwest, so Republicans decided the 8pm estimates were the final count because they were favorable.
But weeks later, after the dust settled? It wasn't even close.
Kamala assumes the presidency and chooses a dem Senator from a purple state. The special election goes to a republican, and Manchin and Sinema block all additional Democrat legislation in the Senate effectively rendering the majority useless.
Nah, unless they get committee chairs, this is the kind of shitstorm even the Democrats understand they get the most out of by not helping. This is the kind of petty, laughing up their sleeves, high school drama that elected Dems love.
Because the more time House Republicans spend looking like clowns who can't agree on simple things, the less time they have to use their power to make Democrats look bad. And, again, politicians are very, very petty, and this kind of clownshow tends to feed that pettiness. They'll back McCarthy for committee chairs or a split rules committee so that they can block the Republicans from using congressional power to make them look bad, but anything short of that is of less value to them than watching the Republican caucus tear itself apart over mostly petty grudges.
committee chairs or a split rules committee
Dems should be offering this deal to any mildly popular Republican. It would cause even more strife on the right and they'd actually get something at the end.
Oh they are so thrilled. "schadenfreude" is trending right now.
I'm still about 50% convinced this is kayfabe and they're going to use it to shut down the government.
"It's clear that McCarthy should be the Republican speaker. Let's not let some rebel holdouts stop our staff from being paid. It's time to get things done!"
:rust-darkness:
I mean, its bound to happen, but not until McCarthy cedes a chunk of the spoils to the right set of liberal defectors.
And part of the reason McCarthy is in the position he's in stems from his longstanding history of reneging on verbal agreements. The Tea Party folks don't trust him to deliver on any of his Speaker campaign-promises. The Dems don't trust him to paid their wallets for defection. The rank-and-file GOP only trust him in so far as their donors compel them to do as they're told. Dude has insufficient political capital to do the horse-trading necessary to seal the deal.
Say what you will about guys like John Boehner or Paul Ryan, but these corrupt fucks will straight up cut you a check on the floor of the House in exchange for your votes. They can build coalitions because they pay their fucking bills. McCarthy is just an endless bag of hot air. His promises are worthless. All his checks bounce. There is no benefit to doing business with him unless a third party is covering his tab.
So I think he's going to continue failing these votes until the GOP finds someone that either the Tea Party brigade or some break-away Dems can actually make a deal with. Maybe that means McCarthy going third-party and having a Mercer or a Thiel massage someone's balls in the coat room. Maybe that means bringing in Liz Cheney as a neutral non-partisan third party speaker. But as it stands, McCarthy ain't got shit.
Come on
Don't make me throw myself into the lathe again
That hurts
I really want the Dems to back Matt Gaetz’s absolutely insane idea of Donald Trump. And then if the Reps don’t go with it their base will eat them alive
:trump-anguish: complicated business folks, they give you this hammer - a little hammer, it goes “bang bang bang” - and they call it - “gavel” - “gavel”. Like gravel on a building site, but without the “r”. So I have the hammer and they say “President Trump, this is ceremonial, you don’t hit it multiple times, just to open and close proceedings”, and I”m thinking “to hell with that” - and I’m hitting it like Pete Seeger did in that beautiful song about the construction industry. And now the failing New York Times has a problem with it! Sad!
I feel like today's politics is basically "Whoops! All Conservatives!"
:liberalism: This is a genuine possibility and I am also awaiting this outcome
They could try playing McCarthy and the freedom caucus against each other for concessions in exchange for their votes.
Republicans would just betray then. You can't negotiate with people like that they'll turn on you immediately.
