Imagine a seventh rate political satire that's ridiculous and not plausible at all. That could be the US in ~6 months or so.

Once the crazies crash the economy they can scream stuff like...

      • The Jews destroyed the economy!

      • Satan and the demoncrats helped the Jews!

      • We have to end Social Security and the other entitlement programs to save our country!

      • The devil is here and we must become a Christian nation immediately!

If their messaging is right - a sizable percentage of the GOP base will believe them. It's insane but it's where we are as a nation. They are post-sanity and post-reason. All they have is their rage and their conspiracy theories.

They already say this shit. They've been saying it since Reagan. Some of it since Eisenhower (dismantling New Deal programs has been pretty big on Republicans' radar since the 50s).

I guess the difference between then and now (the Cool Zone(TM)) is that the ones just trying to rile up the base are all dead or retired, and we're left with the true believers that were created in their wake.

They don't, they want to use the threat of it to force the Dems to cut Medicare and Social Security. They've done this before, but no one really believed that they will go through with it (they didn't). That is where the entire sequestration thing happened.

Because government spending bad, government bad, if the government implodes then corporations can fill in the power vacuum - that’s the ideological justification

The real pragmatic reason is that it gives the crazy rightoids more leverage to play chicken and make demands

If we default on the national debt that's A Bad Thing, so they can use the threat of that happening as leverage to obliterate the funding for what little public services we have

13th Speaker ballot is headed for failure again.

The Republican opponents are down to six, with Andy Harris flipping on this ballot.

    The NO votes:

    • Biggs
    • Boebert
    • Crane
    • Gaetz
    • Good
    • Rosendale

It will be really funny when the 'stabbed in the back' myth more or less required for fascism occurs but we aren't even actually at war with anyone or lost any battles, we just literally imploded our own economic base due to incredible mismanagement. Literally first as tragedy, second as farce.

McCarthy was talking about doing this months ago. I guess they don't believe him and want him to say it multiple times?

For me the craziest thing about all of this is that so many of the main players are dumb as fucking rocks. Did he put it in writing or did he pinkie swear? Whatever is going on - it's 100% batshit.

IIRC McCarthy was talking about this a few days ago and from his words it looks like he believes not raising the debt ceiling only causes a government shutdown (like the one when Trump was president), not a default on US debt.

They drive stock and bond prices down a few times a year so their bosses can buy them, then they agree to kick the can down the road one more time. There's no can to kick but there is a treasury market to manipulate.
