Bill Watterson refusing to sell merch for Calvin & Hobbes and allowing the strip to end when he was out of ideas is a show of scruples I'm not sure we'll ever see out of a newspaper funnies author ever again.

Can you believe people used to defend trees and the natural environment using techniques such as tree spiking with spikes or ceramic, destroying construction equipment through targeting the engine oil, pulling up survey markers, pulling drains, cutting fences, flattening tires, undercutting roads, and destroying billboards?

I for one can't believe instructions for these effective and non violent techniques were once documented in one place called " Ecodefense: A Field Guide to Monkeywrenching"

Im glad we are far past the need for such things

One time I was nearly blackout drunk by myself and was this close to getting a Ferris wheel going before I got caught

i learned how to drive an articulating lift for work and started glancing at the ground control panels on the ones around town and wow do they just really leave the keys in there a lot. maybe they take the basket key with them, i don't know.

Yeah, even when they lock up, it is really easy to get around. I was able to borrow the construction tools to fix an issue at a telescope array by just noticing the lock for the tools of the maintenance crew only had one digit with visible wear and tear on it, and they only lock tools and keys by changing one digit on the lock.

It's not just tools and equipment, literally all communication, power, and water infrastructure is readily accessible with no keys (or minimal picking for bigger junctions).

Next time you see one, go pop the lid off a comm ped or hand hole. You can basically just splice yourself in for free of you know where to plug it in. Water is the same way, when they cut you off it's literally at an unsecured valve at the street. So you can just go flip it back on. Power too, though sometimes you might need to bypass the meter which you shouldn't do if you don't know what you're doing. Great way to get 30A at 120V right to the chest.

But for real, shits insane. All of the infrastructure backbone of America relies on security through obscurity.

Once had someone I was dating who had no idea how weirdly into newspaper comics I am and described me as a combination of Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side. Which was both flattering and honestly, pretty apt.

...in this particular case, it could be weird. Was a best friend who we tried dating for a minute when we were less familiar. Anyway, they died about a year ago. I get the gag you were going for but in this specific case, it would be weird.

Thanks. It's been a pretty fucked year. Lost 2 friends to fentanyl and 1 to lung cancer. Being poor is becoming more and more of a death sentence.

I'm sorry to hear that. Its been awhile since I've lost anyone that I knew personally. A couple public figure deaths around my age or much younger have got me feeling extremally mortal which is a feeling I do not like. But other than that it's been awhile. Didn't even lose anyone to covid somehow. (I'm doing the autism thing where I talk about my own experiances to relate to you I've been told that can be offputting but idk how else to be).

But yeah, sorry you're going through that comrade.

That's fine, I made your joke comment about me. A friend of mine who drums in a punk band actually opened their song Pharmaceutical Warfare with the line "I don't know anyone that's died from covid but over ten of my friends have died from fentanyl since the pandemic started." He got on methadone when covid hit and was a lifelong junkie beforehand, he anticipated what would happen to the supply since fent was becoming an issue already. The most recent pal was only about a week ago, keybump on weekends coke user, got a sloppy batch and now he's dead at 40. A decent amount of my pals live or lived a pretty rock n roll lifestyle, but things have gone from 'probably okay if you keep your shit together to 'you will die if you touch this stuff'.
