My friends were complaining about trans people getting Pikamee cancelled. They were saying how Pikamee is the next big thing. What the hell are they talking about Jesse? :jesse-wtf:

Vtuber was on hiatus, came back with wizard game stream announcement. People got mad at her, she seemed blinsided by the controversy went silent for a bit and is now quitting.

Seems like she was already on the edge and this was just a extra push so she's out. More fuel for the online culture war fire.

I mean it's extremely easy to be blindsided by this kind of thing. Even easier if you don't speak English or spend your time on English websites. Unless you spend time on US and UK twitter, you won't know about the controversy. I didn't know about it until people on here started talking about it. Admittedly I'm not into Harry Potter stuff so I didn't even know there was a game out until someone made a post that the people behind Disney infinity were making a Harry Potter game. Last I heard it sold 12 million copies or something and fake JK Rowling tweets were making the rounds.

She does speak English but seems to be a Japanese national living in Japan.

Looking at vtubers and the wizard game, looks like pretty much every Japanese Hololive member played it without much in the way of public repercussions while the English branch has avoided the game entirely. (The English management was probably savvy enough to advise them to steer clear.)

She was born in Texas to an American dad and Japanese mom. Her parents got divorced and mom moved back to Japan and she went with. This was when she was in her teens I think.

That many bad actors in her chat from places like 4chan tried to act like trans people that hate wizard game to stir up drama. They have done this in the past and this time it worked.

Makes the gamers’ inevitable outbursts even more stupid

What is it with Bernkastel profile pics and just having the shittiest opinions online? Have you even played Umineko mate? Completely missing the point.

Yeah but Bernkastel is a character from Umineko which among other things

Pretty heavy spoiler for Umineko which is an amazing VN so play that instead of reading this

has multiple gender non-conforming characters that experience dysphoria. These aren't played as a joke or anything. The entire story could be summed up as "Learn how and why this gender non-conforming character did the things they did and empathize with them to solve the mystery."

I'm not saying the representation is perfect as this was written by a cis man in 2007, but the comment goes against the entire foundations of Umineko. It's like watching Avatar and saying "Yeah we need to burn more trees down."

Idk if "pick-me" counts as a slur given it can kinda be applied to any minority group, but I guess its most often used for women so in some cases it can be a misogynist slur.

Some Vtuber is quitting and some people on the interwebs are blaming the trans agenda for cancelling the 3d anime girl.

If you don't understand you don't need to understand it's very silly and won't help you at all.

    for extra fun:

everyone knew she was quitting/moving on to a different group/going independent anyway because she was voms biggest personality but wasn't included in their plans a month ago.

I don't know anything about vtubers so I looked it up and read some articles and watched her video, and I still don't understand. Is this like a real person that uses software to make them look animated, or is it a company that designs a character and hires a voice actor, or is it AI generated? And if enough people are mean to them in the comments, they stop making videos forever and say that they "graduated"? Could the person behind Pikamee create a new character and continue making videos under a new persona, or could a different person make Pikamee videos? Is this more like The Waldo Moment Black Mirror episode or is it like Gorillaz?

Disclaimer: I do not watch vtubers.

Is this like a real person that uses software to make them look animated, or is it a company that designs a character and hires a voice actor

It's a combination of these two. An actor (often already a streamer/entertainer of some sort) is hired by a company (there are also independent vtubers but Pikamee isn't one of those). The actor and company design a character for them to play on their streams. In theory, nobody knows who the actor is, though IIRC many have been figured out. Even so, most people ignore this, and only refer to the character.

And if enough people are mean to them in the comments, they stop making videos forever and say that they “graduated”?

"Graduating" is slang meaning they quit. This could be due to anything because the companies don't say what happens.

Could the person behind Pikamee create a new character and continue making videos under a new persona

It's possible they might have some non-compete agreement or something so maybe, maybe not. Also note that there is substantial cost in getting a decent avatar (several thousand dollars).

could a different person make Pikamee videos?

Possible but unlikely. I think this happened once for one of the oldest vtubers and people flipped out (it's worth noting that vtuber fans are extremely online). Much more likely to just make a new character instead.

From what my friend tells me it is like the Waldo Moment black mirror where a real person voices an animated character that goes along with their facial expressions and stuff. They're trying to tell me it's the next big thing and that no one knows about it, but it all sounds very online to me.

They use motion capture - cameras, IR sensors, whatever, to map their own facial movements to what is essentially a 3d puppet. It's like anime muppets that play video games.

It was pretty wild, I got about 10 TERF straight bigoted accounts banned off Twit before realizing I was pissing into the ocean figuratively over this today and wanting to not ruin my day further. Some the the nastiest vitriol, straight out of 8ch*n/KiwiFarms; with your average percentile dogwhistling, saying the "Alphabet Mafia" needs retribution for taking away their favorite Vtuber. Then posting pics portraying themselves, no sarcasm, staring at her as Arthur from :joker-troll: into an old TV - "WE GO TO THEIR STREAMS AND ATTACK BACK," some of their posts said, before they were baleeted.

I don't know the person from anyone, and I don't know their politics, and I don't necessarily wish them any will one way or the other, but they sure as fuck have a toxic fan base. I wish they did their homework or had a better manager regarding playing the wizard game beforehand, and I also wish a little bit that some of the criticism may have been in the form of an email just telling them to look at proper videos & articles covering the topic. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, and now she has this :frothingfash: :terf-alert: going AWOL.

I watched Pikamee before she got big but all the sudden about a year ago there was a shift in her fanbase that you could clearly tell in chat to the point I could not watch her anymore. She belongs to a group called VOMS and they do not have handlers at all and the person who makes their vtuber models is super hands off.

It's quite clear that her departure has been planned since before any of the wizard game drama happening and people pointing to that are just trying to feed into the narrative that she was bullied off the internet when this has been a decent time coming. It's timing pretty well with the end of the Japanese fiscal year so she's probably not renewing her contract. They've also planned a popup store around her graduation so they've had to have known since before the wizard game shit. There's probably something behind the scenes that is influencing the decision and she might just be going independent or joining another group entirely.
