      1920s Berlin was home to the first ever institute that studied trans people: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institut_f%C3%BCr_Sexualwissenschaft Hirschfeld, the head and founder of the institute, also performed the first bottom surgery on a trans woman. So yeah, it was pretty queer place until the Nazi's came to power and burned it all down.
